The lines you quoted were basically derived from Mga Karunungan sa Larong Arnis by Placido Yambao and James Sy had already dissected the historical flaws of Mirafuente's section of Arnis history. Other than mentioning the word Kali, Mirafuente's essay did not give us anything solid to work on, rendering the the notion that Kali is the ancient name of the FMA highly questionable and unlikely, in the same token as the supposed Tasaday Tribe, the Maragtas, Kalantiaw, etc. As I've previously advised Pat Davies, it would be of great help if people would start reading the book of Yambao and do their own research to verify it. Reading the book would be easy, if there is the intention. Get hold of the version by Rey Galang, Classic Arnis, The Legacy of Placido Yambao. Still no solid historical proof. Red Gonzales kali warrior wrote: Mr. Sy, May I offer some references If you try to read Arnis Lanada by Amante P. Marinas, it says, ?Arnis evolved from kali, an ancient martial art practiced by early Filipinos. Kali, generally believed to have come from Indonesia, is a highly systemized form of fighting which was taught in tribal schools called bothoan prior to 1521." And in Pananandata by the same author, ?Prior to 1610, kali was known by many names depending upon the dialect of the warrior. Kali was known as pananadata in Tagalog, pagakalikali in Ilbanag, kalirongan in Pangasinan, kaliradman in Visayas,?" "Indeed by 1853 the word kali had almost disappeared, replaced by the word "arnes" which later became "arnis" " "Kali was orginally practiced by the royalty of the Visayan and the Tagalog regions, by the Amandakwas of Pangasinan and the Baruwangs of Cagayan." GM Marinas is one of the most respected guros in the US. --------------------------------- Tired of spam? Yahoo! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello, Does anyone have any knowledge of martial arts schools that practice FMA in Las Vegas (proper) or the outlying Henderson area? I would like to specifically train more knife fighting if possible, since I have been doing FMA for 11 years in my area without training with any guro that specializes in knife and knife defenses. Thank you, -E _________________________________________________________________ http://newlivehotmail.com --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2007 15:39:52 -0700 (PDT) From: John Montes To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: PTK Seminar Contact Info...
