Now telling would be something...I am not sure myself if the late General had anything to do with the tourney setup or with fixing the outcome, but he was head of NARAPHIL back then. As for claims about fixing the outcome: those that I know of involved fixing the outcome in favor of one of the participants. Whether he was part of that I don't know. None of the people who told me the stories about that event ever mentioned it to me. This is a tricky topic, by the way. Some of the GMs are still alive, some have passed on. When somebody brings up the discussion about who fixed what in favor of whom, the students and students' students of the GMs in question will of course take issue and sides with whatever statements are posted here. You know how it goes, "How dare you say that about our GM! That's disrespectful of you!!" The old saying about sleeping dogs... To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net You are correct in stating Manong Roland dantes lost original film in the fire at his home. In relation to the movies, 'Pacific Connection' was set in the times of the Spanish occupancy of the Philippines and 'Sticks of Death' features the tournament scene. In fact, there is footage of the tournament in the movie. Bot do you have copies of the films? Regards, David Felipe Jocano wrote: Hi Ray, Back then, most of the tournaments were held under the auspices of the NARAPHIL. As far as I know, there was only one masters' invitational tournament in the late 1970s, probably around 1977 or 78. (I could be wrong about the dates, the kuyas here on the list would have exact dates). The most talked about took place in Manila, and featured the GMs such as Mang Ben Lema (LSAI), Timoteo Maranga (Balintawak), Cacoy Canete (Doce Pares) and Jose Mena (Doblete Rapillon). I mentioned these four because their bouts were the most talked about among the oldtimers. I think that this was the first and last of its kind, whereby heads of associations put their money where their sticks were. From the stories I heard, though, there was plenty of controversy - disagreements being rife as to who won what against whom. This little detail could use some correcting though... And for any of you out there who have a copy of Manong Roland Dantes' movie, The Pacific Connection, as in a copy of the original film, perhaps on DVD or VCD, the opening scene is the said tournament itself. I was told that the match between Mang Ben and GM Maranga was the main feature. Manong Roland had copies of the film in his house here in Quezon City, but unfortunately, his house burned down and everything was lost, including the original films themselves. Additional detail: Whereas the students fighting in the tournaments wore armor, helmet, forearm guards and gloves, the GMs wore the armor and helmet only. No guards for the arms and hands, and all the bouts were live sticks. The reasoning was that if you were GM and head of your own association, you were good enough not to need that kind of additional protection. You can imagine the injuries received that day.
