I'm excited to announce that Punong Guro Bob Manalo of IESA (International Eskrima Serrada Association) is in charge of the FMA presentation at the Pistahan event this year. Mabagani (Braulio) will be there representing his Filipino cultural group with their awesome Moro weapons display. They have great FMA/Silat clothing for sale, and one of my favorites is their Pacquiao fan t-shirt that reads "PAC YOU" haha. I actually picked up a pair of his black cotton pants, but I hear the 100% silk is waaay better. There'll be lots of food, a parade, and lots of other things goin on including music (see flyer!). There's no admission, all are welcome! Come celebrate with us! Here's the official site: http://www.pistahan.net/festival/index.htm Here's a flyer Jun has on his site (print & display in your place of business, locals!!): http://www.reflectionsofasia.com/us%20canada%20pistahan.jpg Peace John ____________________________________________________________________________________ Fussy? Singing bands and cultural dances of well-known performers in L.A. and other surrounding cities added color to the celebration. Featured were the Friday Night Garage Band of Pia Alvarez Malabanan, Bob Luarca, Jojo Llamoso, Jun Gonzales, Armand Villena, Edmond Narrido, Noel Siacumco, Mark Carreon and Jou Sugay. The USC Trojan PN Dancers, Bambu, the Burlington School Children, Pam Darden of the Marvelletes and the Indig Dancers wowed the Filipino-American community. A block had to be closed by the L.A. Police Department to give way to the celebration of at least 1,000 expectators during the two-day festivities. There were also comedy acts by Joseph Gelito and Ray C. Guests from Mexico, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Colombia and Guam came with their respective numbers. They were part of the El Mundo Hispano Saluda al Filipinotown and Proyectos Saluda Coalition organized and spearheaded by Alvaro Vanegas. Featured Sunday was the five-kilometer run-walk event where Consul General Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon was a special guest. A book presentation by Cheri Gaulke entitled "Valor" was also a feature during the occasion. The book was in honor of Filipino World War II veterans who saw action in the Philippines together with their American counterparts. The Sunday singers also included Sarah Lazatin with Amanda Tucker, Mike Andaya & DJ Poblete. Show time was also magic time for the kids. For the adults, there was the People's Core Eskrima exhibit. Likewise, Rhythm Native Dancers provided entertainment to the public. The anniversary celebration was made possible through the help of collaborating organizations such as the Pilipino American Networjand Advocacy (Pana), the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles, the Filipino American Library, the People's Community Organization for Reform and Empowerment (People's Core), the Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (Sipa), Silver Lake Adult Day Health Care Center, Pilipino Workers' Center (PWC) and Echo Park Calvary Chapel Church. The festival was organized by the Historic Filipino Town Neighborhood Council headed by its president Cecile Ramos. Historic Filipinotown is located between Westlake and Echo Park where most Filipinos reside. The district is bounded by the 101 Freeway to the north, Beverly Blvd. to the south, Hoover St. to the west and Glendale Blvd. to the east. It was created by a resolution proposed by city councilmember Eric Garcetti on August 2, 2002. Historic Filipinotown is historically one of the few areas where Filipinos first settled during the early part of the 20th century, according to the organizers. To this day, however, many Filipinos have already moved to other places such as Glendale and Eagle Rock. Still, during most occasions, they flock to Historic Filipinotown to trace their roots in and hold parties and meetings and remember their old traditions. The Historic Filipinotown in downtown L.A. is now populated mostly Mexicans and Central Americans. Nevertheless, the area still has one of the highest concentrations of Filipino. It is estimated that there are at least 200,000 Filipinos who reside in the City of Los Angeles of which 10,000 are within Historic Filipinotown as of the last count. The Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council, Inc. leads the effort for political and economic development in the area, according to its website. It says the area is host to many Filipino restaurants, churches, and medical clinics. On November 11, 2006, the City of Los Angeles dedicated the first Filipino WWII Veterans Memorial in the nation at Lake St. Park in Historic Filipinotown, site of the former Our Lady of Loretto High School. Filipinos were known to have settled in Southern California starting in 1587 during the Mexico-Manila galleon trade. The first Historic Filipinotown sign was installed Thursday, August 8 five years ago at the intersection of Temple St. and Union Ave. Said Filipino-American Tony Cartagena, mayor of Walnut five years ago: "This is a very significant occasion; it's a special day for each and every Filipino and Filipino-American." --__--__-- Message: 4 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2007 13:21:27 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Subject: [Eskrima] Happy B-day Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Happy Birthday to Manong Cacoy. 88 years young today, 8/8.
