I am currently teaching at Pat's gym in Scotland and he just showed me your post. Thanks for your kind comments about my work. In my experience the open palm is stronger, safer and more effective than any of the closed fist techniques available. Naturally it is also easier to teach to novices coming for personal protection training.Striking with the closed fist is to risky and prone to injury. Too many bones all curled up into a ball. Using the open hand is the preferred technique of almost everyone I know who work, as it were, on the front line. Doormen, soldiers, policemen etc. Many of whom I have taught over the years. I have personally used it to great effect in a variety of situations and it has proved itself every time...and I mean every time. I must also add that my background includes traditional training styles such as Japanese and Okinawan Karate so I have been trained to strike with the fist. Indeed I spent a great deal of time in my youth(a long time ago!) toughening my fist by striking the makiwara board. However when I used one of these techniques the first time I realised, very quickly that without this conditioning I may very well have broken my hand. I do know students who have used the closed hand in combat but once shown the palm heel immediately revert using it in their day to day work. I hope this clarifies matters for you. best wishes Bob On 8/19/07, Michael Koblic wrote: > Pat Davies wrote: > "my Thai instructor and friend Bob Spour went to do an episode for NG > based on his SAS self protection methods.
