I can say with all honesty that Larry Hartsell was one of the most amazing and influential people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I met Larry in 1981 at the Degerberg Academy in Chicago. We were there to attend a Dan Inosanto seminar, and a bunch of us, including Larry, were camping out at the school overnight. I introduced myself to Larry, we struck up a conversation, and he ended up sitting down and talking to me for about two hours about Bruce Lee, James Lee and the Oakland schools, JKD training, and whatever struck our fancy. Larry was open, warm, sincere, and a literal textbook of martial arts knowledge. We shared a common passion for boxing, and he went into great detail with me about the boxing/JKD connection, clarifying questions I'd had for years. Larry didn't know me from Adam, but because he knew my teachers, he was more than gracious to me, and answered any question that I had. Larry was also very interested in my art (Serrada Eskrima), and questioned me at length about our numbering system, training methods, and basic structure of Serrada. He even went so far as to take notes while he was talking to me...talk about a humbling experience. Here was a man light years ahead of me in the arts, but was both confident and humble enough to still have the keen interest in something he wasn't familiar with, and did not for a second let any ego invade. I have never met anyone else so humble and sincere, and with such a hunger for learning. But, I guess that is how the great become great...to continue to look at the world with an inquisitive eye and genuine desire to keep learning and absorbing, to realize that the journey never ends, and maintain the passion for a lifetime. Rest in peace, Larry, and know that you touched and inspired so many during your brief stay with us. We will strive to follow your example. If he is certified to teach the art, teaches with a good heart and makes his students better people then he is doing his job as a teacher of FMA. All these postings do is drive the wedge of division further down the divide. Imagine you and I were from two different villages fighting a common enemy; would you worry about my successorship or my skills while on the battlefield? Let's use this forum for a positive purpose not for petty arguments. Please forgive me if I've offended anyone. I'll be there for about 11 days. I'd like to visit a school that teaches Krabi Krabong. I have been googling like crazy, but no dice. Any other suggestions about what to do (besides the usual) would be appreciated. Thanks!
