Since I and Ray were the ones who raised some questions, I assume that I am included in your reference to the "guys.") Therefore, what I wanted to say is this...if you re-read my posts, I declared Mark Wiley himself to be the source of the points that I raised concerning certain claims he and others made. I only said things that Mark himself brought up, so I did not make any accusations, just took him to task on things he brought up in interviews and in his own publications. If you say it, you have to take responsibility for it, and he most definitely said it (The "Masters" certificates thing, and the secrets of Cabales Serrada he claims he and others were solely privy to). Ok, I'm done now, sorry if I offended anyone, that was never my intention, Kim Satterfield Message: 1 Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2007 04:27:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Felipe Jocano Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Mark Wiley Seminars in England To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello Ray and everyone, Well, OK. With all due respect, Ray, I may not agree that my questions have been duly answered. Although I appreciate your appreciation ;-) (bad English, but what the hey). Yes, I agree, let's move on. Just this last word from me on this particular topic: Guys, I hope you understand where I'm coming from when I asked questions about proof of statements regarding people's actions and motives and such. This is a great egroup to be in - I learn a lot from discussions here -not to mention laugh at the jokes :-) But, when I read statements like the stuff we've been discussing back and forth, I am honestly curious about the reasons for the statements made. Perhaps I'm biased (and maybe I'll get flack for it *shrug* I don't know) considering I know the party concerned. It's just that when a statement is made that concerns a person's motives and therefore touches upon his reputation, I believe that there had better be really strong proof to back it up. Otherwise we get potentially troublesome situations. But anyway, I'll drop it. Promise. For now at least ;-) Bot In the words of the late, great John Belushi, "Wise Up" --------------------------------- Sick sense of humor? Visit Yahoo! The 47-year-old Stockton man's spina bifida and prosthetic right leg require him to use crutches to get around. Among the traits that can't be observed is his spirit. Bonjoc, 47, is a master, or guro, of two forms of escrima, an ancient Filipino martial art. He teaches the sport in Stockton and all over the world. Teaching, he said, "is a big honor for me and because of my disability; it allows me to represent those of us with physical challenges." Bonjoc was born with spina bifida in the Philippines. His family moved to Stockton in 1971. His physical affliction, and not knowing English, made his transition difficult and made him an easy target for bullies at McKinley Elementary School. His sister, Bernadette Reisenbeck, was learning escrima from their father, Carlito Bonjoc Sr. She convinced him to teach her 10-year-old brother. Gaining skill in the hand-to-hand combat training of the weapons-intensive system boosted Bonjoc's self confidence and ended the bullying. Bonjoc's training advanced, and his father, a grand master in one system, sent him to learn from master Roy Ornor and grand master Angel Cabales. Bonjoc is a guro of his father's Cadiz Lapu-Lapu system, as well as the Cabales-Serrada system. Bonjoc graduated from Franklin High in 1980 and attended Delta College, and during this time he competed against able-bodied people in escrima events throughout California. He also was managing a local pizza restaurant. However, his world collapsed in 1987 when a blister on his right leg became infected to the bone. Doctors initially treated him with antibiotics, but the problem worsened. Bonjoc underwent several surgeries over the next six years. He was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, a bone infection caused by bacteria. Bonjoc had his leg amputated, otherwise, the infection likely would have killed him. "It was really tough," Bonjoc said "There were times when I really thought it was the end for me. I'm not ashamed to say that I contemplated suicide. But I had so many people around me that loved me and they allowed me to go on." Bonjoc Sr., 82, believed his son was tough enough to endure the ordeal. The situation was particularly difficult on Bonjoc's mother, Martina, who feared she might lose her son. Greg Salgado, Bonjoc's best friend of 25 years, said it's been amazing to watch him rebuild his life. "He's been an inspiration," Salgado said. "He's always demonstrated a high level of indomitable spirit. For him to have persevered is incredible." Bonjoc didn't know it at the time, but the amputation provided him with a new beginning. Cabales began training Bonjoc specifically to teach, and he became an expert. With the help of his friend and assistant, Sombat Somboun, Bonjoc now makes his living privately training students in California and working in real estate. His Stockton-based school Mata Sa Bagyo, has about 300 affiliates across the United States and Europe. The affiliates learn Bonjoc's training techniques through his Web site, bagyo.net. One of Bonjoc's prominent students is mixed martial arts fighter Jennifer Tate of Lodi. She said escrima is useful in her combat sport and that Bonjoc's attention to detail makes him a superb teacher. Bonjoc said he is most proud that he has brought his father's teaching into prominence. The elder Bonjoc was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame on Aug. 4 in Las Vegas. Bonjoc was named the Filipino martial arts instructor of the year. Bonjoc's sister said she is very proud of her brother's accomplishments. "I'm just in awe how into teaching he is," Reisenbeck said. "It's his passion and he's keeping the culture and escrima alive." --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 07:07:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Felipe Jocano Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Re: Mark Wiley To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello, Kim; I appreciate your clarification about the statements you made concerning Mark. If you were offended by my last post, I apologize for that since upon rereading my post, it can be construed the way you phrased it below (both our posts are included). However, I should also clarify that my questions to Ray concerned his statements about Mark and GM Binas. Ray has already made his statements about my questions so I've agreed to drop it and move on. I limited my questions to that topic and not touch on Mark's relationship to you guys in the CSE community, out of respect to all of you, even if I haven't met any of you except online. Well, two guys actually - my friends who visit here from time to time. It's your community and your lineage, and as someone from another lineage, it would be improper for me to comment on the goings-on in your community. When I made the statement beginning "Guys..." it wasn't just for you and Ray and the others who commented about Mark. It was meant for everyone here in the Digest community, and it was an expression of how I felt about the issue. I suppose I may be called to task for commenting again on something I was supposed to drop ;-) so, I'm ending it here.
