Yes, I know most of the folks in the area, and some I've trained with before, but I'd really like to just get some friends together to play (umm, better not call it kali/eskrima/arnis, we just did the linguistics thing) "Whatchacallit" with. A few people, maybe a half-dozen, who could take turns leading workouts, just sharing what they know. I'm doing a lot of Bagua Zhang these past few years, which is good in its own way, but my FMA are getting rusty. I'd like to polish that up, and get some good hard sparring again, all of that. Empty hands, stick, staff, knife, wrasslin', the whole nine yards If you're in the area, drop me a line! Now, back to the important question: Who would win in a fight between a Ninja and a Vogon? ;-) afm -- Andrew Maddox, madsox2k at freeshell dot org Practitioner of Unaffiliated Martial Arts But really just, like, this guy, y'know? --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 02:59:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Jon Broster To: Eskrima Digest Subject: [Eskrima] Tim Tackett seminar next Monday Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Seminar with Tim Tackett, covering Jun Fan / Jeet Kune Do At Urban Martial Arts, Leicester Monday 3 September 2007 6pm – 9pm Cost £20 For further information 0116 2538668 Jon "There's nothing more dangerous than a blunt knife" http://www.pecahan.net --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 06:47:15 +0000 (GMT) From: Bandile Dlabantu To: FMA Subject: [Eskrima] Seminar New York Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Guys Much has been said about South African Knife fighting. FROM Literacy of the Pre-Hispanic Filipinos: "The baybayin continued to thrive in many parts of the Philippines in the first century of Spanish occupation. Even before the end of the 1500's the Spaniards were already printing books in the Tagalog script (see Literature), which indicates at least an adequate level of literacy. Some accounts went so far as to say that the literacy rate was almost 100%. A Jesuit priest, Father Pedro Chirino wrote in 1604 that: So accustomed are all these islanders to writing and reading that there is scarcely a man, and much less a woman, who cannot read and write in the letters proper to the island of Manila. B3 And Dr. Antonio de Morga, a Spanish magistrate in the Philippines echoed Chirino's enthusiasm in 1609: Throughout the islands the natives write very well using [their letters]... All the natives, women as well as men, write in this language, and there are very few who do not write well and correctly. B4 These oft quoted observations were exaggerations, of course; the historian William H. Scott managed to turn up several examples from the 1590s of datus who could not sign affidavits or oaths, and witnesses who could not sign land deeds in the 1620s. B5 Nevertheless, it appears that wherever the baybayin was available, literacy was common not only among the elite but at all levels of society." FROM Literature of the Ancient Filipinos : " All early Spanish reports agreed that pre-Hispanic Filipino literature was mainly oral rather than written. Legazpi's account of 1567, quoted earlier, went on to say: They have their letters and characters... but never is any ancient writing found among them nor word of their origin and arrival in these islands; their customs and rites being preserved by traditions handed down from father to son without any other record. B8 The Boxer Codex manuscript from 1590, also mentioned earlier, reported that: They have neither books nor histories nor do they write anything of length but only letters and reminders to one another... [And lovers] carry written charms with them. B9 Aside from writing letters and poetry to each other, the ancient Filipinos adorned the entrances of their homes with incantations written on bamboo so as to keep out evil spirits." So as it seems, PG Mat and Mr. James, both your statements are substantiated. "Untog - bangs head accidentally on a hard object or worse got hit with a yantok on the head.) I beg to disagree with that statement PG Mat. Fr. Pedro Chirino noted in 1604 that almost all of the Filipinos knew how to read and write. They used a 17-letter alphabet called Baybayin or Alibata, which originated from the Asokan alphabet of India. The used the sipol with wood and leaves for writing. They did write, only problem was they used biodegradeable materials. The Tagbanuas of Palawan and Mangyans of Mindoro to this day still use this ancient Filipino alphabet. James U. Sy Jr. Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. I was the lucky winner :-) I need some help identifying it, and figured that given the depth of expertise on this list, someone would know what it's called and where it's from. http://inayanmartialarts.com/gallery/moro_01.jpg Overall length is 23", blade is 17.5" Handle appears to be kamagong, carving is rough but the feel in the hand is very good. Thanks for any insights you can provide.
