Are these >the years that Remy was actively teaching and forming his Modern Arnis in >the RP? > > No. Modern Arnis was founded in 1957 in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental. At least GM Remy Presas referred later to this year. At that time, the people who were learning under GM Presas, did not know it would be called Modern Arnis later. From 1961 up to 1969 he taught Modern Arnis in Bacolod City, the Capital of Negros. He taught first at the De La Salle grade school (from 1961), later, 1965, he opened the first Arnis school in Bacolod and started to teach at UNOR, the University of Negros Occidental. 1969 he relocated to Manila, taught there at universities, colleges and at his Arnis school, very busy to promote his Modern Arnis in the Philippines. And very successful. 1973 he received the "All filipino Sports Award". >Was it in 1975 that he left the RP for the US? > > Yes, in 1975 he had to flee from the Philippines and he immigrated to the US. >We've heard (from Rocky, I think?) that Remy really looked up to Cacoy. > This is true. He told me. He said, when he was younger, Cacoy was his idol. >Did he ever study with Cacoy or was it more from a fight fan perspective? > > I think it was from a fight fan perspective. We know quite exactly, who he learned Balintawak from. He acknowledged his teachers in his books. But he never spoke or wrote about Cacoy Canete being one of his teachers. Would be hard to believe anyway, knowing, that Doce Pares and Balintawak are not too friendly with each other, for Balintawak split away from Doce Pares in the 40s or 50s I think. So being an acknowledged Balintawak fighter, I am sure he would not have been able to go to the Doce Pares club to study Doce Pares under GM Cacoy, especially not in the 50s, when GM Remy Presas learned and trained Balintawak in Cebu. But Ray, you have good contacts to GM Cacoy. Why don't you ask him? It would be interesting to hear, if he has any memories of Remy Presas from the 50s. Regards Dieter Knüttel datu@modern-arnis.de PS: All and a lot more about GM Remy Presas can be found in the magazine "50 years of Modern Arnis, 1957 - 2001" --__--__-- Message: 2 Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Re: Remy Presas in the Philippines To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2007 12:03:54 -0700 (PDT) From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Would be hard to believe anyway, knowing, that Doce Pares and Balintawak > are not too friendly with each other, for Balintawak split away from > Doce Pares in the 40s or 50s I think. > > So being an acknowledged Balintawak fighter, I am sure he would not have > been able to go to the Doce Pares club to study Doce Pares under GM > Cacoy, especially not in the 50s, when GM Remy Presas learned and > trained Balintawak in Cebu. > > But Ray, you have good contacts to GM Cacoy. Why don't you ask him? It > would be interesting to hear, if he has any memories of Remy Presas > from the 50s. Good point. I'll ask. I do recall that Cacoy had said that he would visit Balintawak's workouts, held in the rear of the watch repair shop on Balintawak street. I think he was probably there to size up future opponents... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2007 15:14:15 -0700 (PDT) From: John Montes To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] PTK Seminar with GrandTuhon Leo T.
