BBC "The Way of the Warrior" Documentary (Way of the Warrior) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: "Way of the Warrior" To: Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2007 16:25:39 +0100 Subject: [Eskrima] BBC "The Way of the Warrior" Documentary Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Guys It has recently been brought to my attention that information regarding the BBC series "The Way of the Warrior" has been requested as this featured Doce Pares (50th Anniversary) and Guro Inosanto. This is a highly regarded documentary series which was originally broadcast by the BBC in the early 1980's. Over the years I and several others have contacted the BBC numerous times in the hope they could be persuaded to re-broadcast or release the series on DVD/VHS. I believe someone even set up a petition. For years it has been rare to find recordings and even more so the complete series. The few recordings that have been available were usually of very poor quality i.e. copies of copies of copies etc etc. So a high quality set of the whole series has become a highly sought after collection. I suspect that the original films may have been lost or destroyed and the BBC don't want to admit it! Unfortunately it was a common policy around that time for many TV companies to destroy a lot of material simply because they had run out of room to store it and it was too costly to use "out of house" services! I was very fortunate to have recorded and kept every episode. These were recorded on Betamax tape which at the time offered the best quality home tape recording. However as my own tapes were getting on for over 20 years old, with no hope of this treasure ever being available again, I was anxious about the tapes decaying or getting damaged. I am pleased to say that some time ago I finished the task of transferring them from Betamax tape to a 2 Disc DVD set. So this great treasure of a series has been preserved! The series is comprised of 8 episodes which features top Masters of each system. Each part lasts approx 35-40 minutes so the total content is approx 5½ hours long. It is not intended as a training tutorial. It is a documentary going into the rich historical background, philosophy, methods and practices of each system. Each part has numerous footage of demonstrations, explanations and practical applications. Whichever martial art system you may be studying this is a very absorbing and inspiring series. The series is comprised of: 1 Shorinji Kempo 'The New Way' 2 Kalari 'The Indian Way' 3 Aikido and Kendo 'The Sporting Way' 4 T'ai Chi 'The Soft Way' - also included Hsing Yi and Ba Gua 5 Eskrima 'The Philippino Way' 6 Karate 'The Way of the Empty Hand' 7 Kung Fu 'The Hard Way' 8 The Samurai Way If you're interested in obtaining a copy of the DVD set you can contact me via the email address below Robert King, UK. wayofhtewarrior@btinternet.com > On 9/7/07, Sidney Stein wrote: >> There was a BBC documentary done in 1982 about Eskrima, featuring Doce >> Pares (50 Annivesary) and Guro Inosanto.
