Students compete in little known Filipino martial art named Eskrima M. Aasin Pena / Contributing Writer Students in the Rutgers University Filipino Martial Arts Club were recently taught Eskrima, a Filipino martial arts fighting style created by Grandmaster Dionisio "Diony" Canete. The University is one of few that have Filipino martial arts as a registered sports club, and they regularly go to competitions. On average, RUFMA attracts 25 people to its meetings, but has been gaining in recognition. "The club was started 10 years ago and only recently started gaining popularity within the last two years," said RUFMA President Beda Pormentilla, a School of Engineering junior. Eskrima, unlike many other martial arts styles, focuses on weapons training before anything else. Rather than complicated moves, Eskrima is a simplified, yet effective fighting style. "I liked all the defensive maneuvers and strikes," said Darrell Hipolito, a Rutgers College sophomore. "It's a martial arts with actual substance." Beginners must first master how to use a rattan stick before progressing to other weapons and empty hand, said Julio Marquez, a Rutgers College senior. While the stick is just wood from a palm tree, it is extremely durable and breaks only under extreme abuse. The rattan is strong enough to endure hits from blades, Marquez said. "The rattan stick is a wood made in the Philippines and is very stiff and rigid, yet also flexible so when you hit something, there is a slight recoil," Marquez said. Canete is the son of Grandmaster Eulogio Canete, who founded Doce Pares, the world's leading organization in Eskrima. The current grandmaster has been training in the martial arts since 1946. Pormentilla met Canete while training in Jersey City last week and invited him to come to the University. Due to Canete's appearance, over 65 people attended Thursday's meeting. "I came because it sounded interesting, and it's the only time I will be able to see a grandmaster," said Babette Hammerling, a School of Environmental and Biological Sciences first-year student. Although Eskrima is a fighting style, Canete emphasized how violence is not the answer. "We don't like to engage, and in Doce Pares we always, if possible, talk our way out of fighting," Canete said. Canete, who was in the United States to train with the New York City SWAT team, will be returning to the University on Oct. 11for a follow-up training seminar. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 23:09:14 +0000 (UTC) From: Andrew Maddox To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Diony @ Rutgers Univ Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net On Mon, 17 Sep 2007, Eskrima-FMA wrote: > > Grandmaster comes to U. > Students compete in little known Filipino martial art named Eskrima > M. Whoopsie! Looks like the Rutgers paper needs a "sports and martial arts" editor. Very cool to have GM Canete there, but I wonder if he would agree that he "created" eskrima? Anywho, I'm off to cause trouble somewhere...
