Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Or start up a club, depending. Yes, I'm still here, still trying to get a few people to start a little agnostic MA club. FMA would be a good core for it. US, Maryland, Montgomery county - yeah, that guy (me) again. No, I can't get over to Columbia/Laurel to work with Steve or Scott or Bob or Pat, or I'd be there. They're my old buds, so if I could/would go with a more established group, I'd be with one of them. For less-than-strictly formal practice around me, I want to start up something new! So get in touch, refer friends or acquaintances, and let's see if we can't get Capital Area Training Systems going again (hey, Steve - I wanna use the old name, I'll call you about that) Anyway, back to work... Andy, Maddox, mr. Madsox, that guy in Maryland, still here. To: Subject: [Eskrima] Tips on training adults verses kids Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To other teachers, Recently through my work I went to a training class on providing training to adults, here are the ten tips shared with us on how to train adults better: * Characteristic #1 - Adults Generally Desire to Take More Control Over Their Learning Than Youth- Training tip-Allow for self-assessment and evaluation * Characteristic #2 - Adults Draw Upon Their Experiences as a Resource in Their Learning Efforts More Than Youth- Training Tip-Take the time to get to know more about the experiences of your student and seek to help them to link new ideas to such prior learning * Characteristic #3 - Adult Tend to be More Motivated in Learning Situations Than Youth-Training Tip- Whenever an individual is able to choose to learn, he/she is much more motivated to learn * Characteristic #4 - Adults Are More Pragmatic in Learning Than Youth-Training Tip-Weigh the content of education toward the utilitarian, not the theoretical * Characteristic #5 - In Contrast to Youth, the Learner Role is Secondary for Adults- Training Tip-More flexibility in adult education programs than in traditional education. Accept that learners will be preoccupied at times with other roles and responsibilities. * Characteristic #6 - Adults Must Fit Their Learning into Life's "Margins"- Training Tip-Adult learners must learn to carve out some margin in their lives to allow learning to occur, a process of priority setting * Characteristic #7 - Many Adults Lack Confidence in Their Learning-Training Tip-Use collaborative learning approaches in the classroom can do much to alleviate anxiety * Characteristic #8 - Adults are More Resistant to Change Than Youth- Training Tip-Link new concepts to older, understood, and accepted concepts for adult learners. * Characteristic #9 - Adults Are More Diverse Than Youth-Training Tip-Make effort to present material in a variety of ways to accommodate different learning styles * Characteristic #10 - Adults Must Compensate for Aging in Learning-Training Tip-In other words, adults tend to learn less rapidly with age, but what they learn is learned at a deeper and more integrative level. I found this information very useful when teaching adults Guro Marc Lawrence PAKAMUT-Torrance --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 11:51:37 -0600 From: "Gordon Walker" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] JANUARY Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net HI, Planning on hitting the islands in January, yaaaayyyy!!! Derobio Style - Manolo Explains "One of the Lost Arts", as referred to by Great Grandmaster Braulio Pedoy, Derobio Escrima is an ancient bladed Escrima style that went underground in response to the Spanish occupation of the Philippines. A no-nonsense bladed art form, Derobio is structured with a bolo (machete) in one's power hand and the other empty. Today, Derobio Escrima has incorporated various styles of fighting within its system, keeping its foundation on its original bladed movements. Derobio Escrima emphasizes disarming techniques and defensive behaviors rather than aggressive actions. The basis of Derobio is deflecting and controlling. The meeting of force with force is only used if unavoidable and is immediately translated into a more "passive" or fluid movement. 2007 Pacific Island Showdown Ultimate Warrior II International Invitational Ultimate Full-Contact Stickfighting Championships October 13, 2007 FILIPINO COMMUNITY CENTER 94-428 Mokuola St. Waipahu, HI Registration Begins at 8:00 am Entree Fee: $10 Adult, $5 Youth Children 5 & Under FREE Event Divisions I. I want to thank Sensei Toma for the reminder of Prof. Dan Anderson's seminar this Sunday, Oct 7th. I actually look forward to attending the workouts! Kuya Dan, I fondly call him, is one of the people I admire in the FMA arena. His deep knowledge and understanding of several MA systems (not to mention Karate where his record shows 60 Grand Championships and was rated TOP TEN national competitor from 1977 to 1980) will be appreciated in his dynamic yet simplistic presentation of the seminar coverage. Oh, he is also very charismatic guy... I will really enjoy this seminar! See you there!!!
