Spearheaded by Master Albert Mendoza of Doce Pares International/San Miguel Eskrima Council and Guro Narrison Babao of Babao Arnis, this “Building of a Brotherhood” met its goals of sharing, demonstrating and propagating their respective styles, with the intention to further educate the public as well as themselves, of the beauty and diversity of the FMA heritage and culture. Guro Narrsion began the session with an informative explanation of the angles of attack and hitting sequences i.e. counters, in his family system of arnis. The Babao Arnis system is comprised of three fighting systems: Villabrille-Largusa Kali, GM Cacoy Cañete’s Eskrido-Pangamot and the original Baston Batangas taught by Turing Babao. In order not to flood the group with too much information, Guro Narrison mainly approached his family’s system during his session. Placing much emphasis on proper stick position, body angling and footwork, Guro Narrison demonstrated the importance of each, detailing each movement’s purpose in garote to garote confrontations. The strikes showed more significance after he let the group know that the impact of each was based on weaknesses in the actual armor of combatants. This made each player more accurate with their striking. After the group had familiarized themselves with the set drills, translation to knife and empty hands was next. Guro Narrison made the change of weapons precise and understandable, and clearly conveyed his knowledge and skill to all the players. Master Albert Mendoza continued the day, with an explanation and introduction to Doce Pares “Multi Style” and San Miguel Eskrima. With the interest in San Miguel Eskrima growing, Master Albert informed the group of its importance to the modern day Doce Pares “style” of Eskrima. Often referred to as the “Old Style” of Doce Pares, San Miguel Eskrima was created by one of the founders of the Doce Pares Club, Filemon “Momoy” De La Cuesta Cañete, as his own expression of eskrima.. Placing much emphasis on proper body mechanics, speed and power is developed by understanding the natural movements of the body. With his San Miguel training overlooked by Grandmaster Isidro “Edring” Casio and Grandmaster Andres “Kano” Cañete, Master Albert began with one of FMA’s most important and overlooked aspects, hitting or bunal. Teaching a short combative form, the group quickly began to embrace the relevance of swaying or “bambooing”, footwork or pani-il, and hand position and their direct purpose in striking. The form included such strikes as Ekis, Banda-Banda, Redonda, Sungkit and the uno-dos movement, which is clearly an integral part of the Doce Pares brand of eskrima. All of these movements must come together in order to generate speed and power without wasting time or energy. Continuing with a Serra Todo lock, Master Albert stated how important controlling and ending a confrontation can be. Additionally, Master Albert educated the group on Grandmaster Momoy’s larga mano. This part of the session was taught using five angles of attack or cinco terros. The San Miguel part of the day was brought together with his demonstration of “Combat Judo” or San Miguel’s empty hands. Each technique ended with a painful and debilitating lock. The implementation of the daga later on was a great surprise. As the session drew to a close, the group was taught another hitting combination, from the “Multi Style” system of Doce Pares. As a student under Grandmaster Dioniso “Diony” Cañete and Master Percival “Val” Pableo, Master Albert showed a personal favorite of Master Pableo. This last combination displayed speed and pin point hitting, with no wasted movement. It is safe to say that all players walked away with more knowledge, respect and appreciation for their FMA style and culture. Special guest Doce Pares Guro Gary Gabisan of PIMA Academy Jersey City, was also in attendance. Guro Gary recently moved to the West Coast and has studied under Grandmaster Dong Cuesta. Master Albert and Guro Narrison hope to continue the Unity training with more groups in the surrounding areas. The Doce Pares International, California Chapter, San Diego Council // SAN MIGUEL ESKRIMA COUNCIL, CC – USA HQ would like to thank Guro Narrion of Babao Arnis as well as all the participants of the day for their time and dedication to the further propagation and education of the Filipino Martial Arts.
