I will check with Prof. Brown if I can give his email address to you. Incidentally, Prof. Brown is planning to go to the Philippines this January 2008 to visit Col. Geronimo. Yawyan has excellent kicking techniques. Its founder, Nap Fernandez, was my younger aikido brother when I was still in the Philippines. Best. Rama Monday, October 22, 2007 Cebu This piece was quite painful to write. I mean that literally. For every hand movement that accompanied each keystroke—every letter in every word in every paragraph—my arms throbbed in agony. And it's entirely my fault. Ever since the gun ban, I had bugged my buddy Celestino "Tinni" Macachor for lessons on the De Campo JDC-IO Eskrima system. Had I known pain this intense was the outcome, I'd probably been less enthusiastic. Whoop-whack went the stick during our late afternoon practice at, of all places, Bay One of Kamagong Gun Club's shooting facility inside the AFP Central Command Headquarters, last Saturday. Whoop-whack it went again, the equivalent of some proficient shooter's double tap, before I could get my composure back. Businessman and club member Romy Kho fared better, thanks to his long term experience in Aikido, being the man behind the Musobi Dojo. Whoop-whack, whoop-whack, whoop-whack-whoop… whoop-whack! The others present – Dr. Don Garcia, businessman Alvin John Osmeña, my shooting buddy Jed Narvios, one of the top defensive shooters produced by Dr. Tyrone Mercader's Basic Defensive Pistol Course—knew better than to take part. De Campo, as an Eskrima system, has its own loyal following. However, it isn't as much a household name as, for example, Doce Pares or Balintawak. The reason is that the man who developed it, Jose D. Caballero (1907-1987), never intended it to be taught outside his immediate circle–his six sons and one daughter and perhaps a limited number of friends. The system's approach to stick fighting is unique. Its sphere of power rests in the largo mano range–anything that a de Campo fighter can reach with the last two inches of his stick. Stay beyond that and you're safe. Venture inside or allow the fighter to creep in and get you (your weapon hand, outstretched elbow, bent knee, or sagging chin) within range and it's a painful whoop-whack! It uses linear assaults—which come in twos or threes—and thrusts. There are hardly any stick to stick blocks and tapi-tapi. The name of the game is range estimation and whoop-whack. A lot of it is a boxer's hand speed at when to hit and a shooter's accuracy in what to hit. Tinni, who is himself a shooter, sums it up as "simple, fast, intense and violent." The old warrior died on Aug. 24, 1987 but his system lives on through his son, Manuel "Mawi" Caballero, who teaches it in Toledo City, and through his students, led by Ireneo "Eric" Olivades and, of course, Tinni Macachor. GRATITUDE. The family of 'Noy Gregorio Ceniza would like to thank all those who said words of prayer for the eternal repose of the respected Eskrima master's soul. 'Noy Goyong returned to his creator last Oct. 6. He was 82. But his art of Baraw Sugbo lives on with his son, Eduardo "Boy" Ceniza, and his long-time sparring partner, friend and pupil, Cronnie Cabatingan. I visited the old man's home in Casuntingan, Mandaue City, yesterday and was treated to a few hours of blade work with the two. It was a two-storey of bamboo, concrete and galvanized iron. The sala turned into a practice arena with the simple act of moving monobloc chairs away. The way the man lived his life was the way his art unfolded—simple, straightforward and functional. But there was a lot of history in that place. It had, at one time or another, visitors with the likes of Venancio "Anciong" Bacon and Delfin Lopez of Balintawak. Boy also showed me some photos of the old man in training. I'll be posting them, together with some footage of him and Cronnie, at www.eskrima.multiply.com soon. In one photo, the old man supervised as Boy taught Filipino-American Max Pallen their brand of knife-fighting. Pallen is a martial arts instructor well known in the US. He teaches a system of Eskrima called the Sinkotiros abroad. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
