Does anyone know of someone I can study with? We had a school in Norwalk, but it closed down. Does anyone want to start a school in this area? I think it could do well here! Carlos, My wife is applying for Ph.D. programs and Yale's on her short list. I'll let you know if I'm moving to Stamford next fall. I'm just a short ferry ride across the Long Island sound if you're interested in learning San Miguel Eskrima. Seriously though, I think that there is FMA school in Waterbury and a great Pekiti school in Nyack, N.Y. if you don't mind a little travel. Guro term is only used in formal School, and Maestro or Maestra is used in formal school in Tagalog according to the gender of the Teacher or Guro. In our place in Laguna. The Eskrimadores that have high reputable backgrounds in "Eskrima Matches" are called each other "Maestro" follow by their names, such as Maestro Felipe, Maestro Jose, etc. Onlky here in the US and other part of the world I heard the "Guro" term for FMA teacher, becaused in Manila during the time I become part of the Modern Arnis, I dont remember calling Willy Annang Maestro or Teacher, he was called "Instructor" and some practitioner called him "Master Willy". To my young age when I fist saw Prof. Remy Presas demonstrating "Modern Arnis" they called him Grandmaster, and I was fascinated by it. But in a years to come, as I see and learn the arts of Arnis in Laguna, I never heard anybody called Grandmaster. Simply called each other "Maestro" up to this day. I realised a title is part of structured organization oof Martial arts. Since I was forced to strauctured my organization, I start using the title "Guro" just to simply recognize me as Filipino Teacher, nothing else. Guro is title of a teacher, but in the Philippines we are not using them as additional name in front of their name. All school Teacher in the Philippines is address Binibini (Miss) is you are young lady teacher, Ginoo (Mr.) if you are aman and Misis (Mrs.) if you are a married woman teacher. I only heard Guro as refering to a teacher, mostly they also called them Maestra and Maestro. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all, I have a "whatever happened to...? question for you. Whatever became of Tom Bisio? I am familiar with him through a teacher and friend of mine, Al McLuckie, who was a friend and student of Tom for a while, and I was able to view a couple of videos of him training several years ago. The man was amazing, to say the least. the last I heard, Bisio was teaching San Miguel Eskrima; is he still active, where is he, does anyone know anything about him? I saw a video of the tournament which he WON in the Phillippines; He was the first American to win a Doce Pares tournament in the Phillippines if I remember correctly. He was also a long time student of Tuhon Leo Gaje for a while. I think he now dedicates most of his time to the healing arts. Hope this helps!!!
