Tom Bisio (Stephen Lamade) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: Stephen Lamade To: Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2007 04:00:57 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Tom Bisio Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Kim aked: "...the last I heard, Bisio was teaching San Miguel Eskrima; is he still active, where is he, does anyone know anything about him?" Abdon posted Tom Bisio's website: www.tombisio.com. If I could dot a couple of "i's" and cross a few "t's": Tom does indeed still teach martial arts, but on a limited basis due to a very busy schedule running a Chinese Medicine clinic and teaching Chinese medicine. He is the author of three recent books: a book about Chinese Die Da medicine for the layperson, a clinical textbook about Tui Na (Chinese massage) intended for professionals and students of Chinese medicine, and a book about Gao-style baguazhang. Tom has a public baguazhang class on Tuesday mornings in New York City, and teaches other martial arts on a private basis to advanced students. Tom currently teaches (with Frank Butler) a series of Chinese Die Da medicine classes that are the sine qua non for understanding the subject-matter, in my opinion. Anyone interested in developing the relationship between bodywork and martial arts would benefit from taking them. With respect to the 1979 World Stick Fighting Tournament in Cebu: I have heard Tom state with typical modesty on several occasions that he was a co-champion of the instructor's division with GM Uy. (I wish that the authors of a recent book on Cebuano eskrima would re-visit their description of the tournament: perhaps an airing of the video in question would help to convince them that the bout had a "Hearns/Haggler" quality that was somewhat different from the way they end up describing it.) At any rate, Tom was good enough during the bout to catch the eye of Momoy Canete, and this led to an introduction by Leo Gaje that led to Tom studying San Miguel Eskrima with Momoy.
