Believe you me, this is the tip of the... well, sword in fact! In the UK, our politicians are obsessed with control over the population ('cos they know what's best for the rest of us), and an overwhelming desire to be seen to be doing something about whatever 'problem' is in the public eye at any given time. So if there is concern about handguns, swords, lock knives, or whatever, the answer from politicians will always be, "Ban them". According to Home Office minister Vernon Coaker, "In the wrong hands, samurai swords are dangerous weapons". What a f*cking Moron! In the 'wrong' (or right) hands, so is a house brick, beer glass, motor car, and/or a million-and-one other things. This is what we have to live with over here. Presided over, and ruled by, total tossers. But, at the end of the day, we get what the majority of the population (who even bother to vote) elect for us. So now violent offenders will have to buy ninja swords or Blade movie swords or Lord of the Rings swords instead. Wait a minute, wasn't it illegal to carry an offensive weapon before they enacted this new piece of nonsense legislation? Is being attacked by a samurai sword somehow worse than being attacked by another kind of sword? List members need not worry though - there will be exemptions for martial arts experts and sword collectors! I spent the afternoon with my long time buddy and teacher Al McLuckie yesterday, and he showed me a DVD of Tuhon Kier that included a little "contest" Kier and his compadres put together. (Al and Tuhon Kier have be close friends for years). It was full-contact stick fighting, and the rules were very easy to follow...there weren't any. No body targets were off limits, no technique was outlawed, and absolutely no protective equipment was allowed, none, including groin cups. These guys just warmed up and went at it. I've seen a lot in my day, but I can honestly say that I was more than impressed by the sheer guts of these guys. I've been in the martial arts for 35 years, but I've never seen anything that made me wince in pain just watching like this DVD did after every blow these guys landed. They were serious, folks. I just sat back with my mouth hanging open and realized that as brutal as it was, these guys were walking the walk. Subtle Ray, real subtle. I got to say, you have to have some level of protection so you can train full power. What use is a strike that you've trained 5,000,000 times and stopped it with perfect control each and every time just as you touch your training partner? That only gets it fixed in your head that that is how to strike, meaning the walking mack truck who you just beat at pool will only receive a courtesy tap to the head before he rips your arms off and beats you round the head with the soggy end. In my group I use actionflex sticks, rattan sticks, fencing masks, hockey gloves and to some extent wekaf armour. Everything is done at varying levels of contact, including full contact and fully controlled - in each level of armour. To be honest, I've not really used body armour much, because even at full contact with heavy rattan sticks, body shots, I have found, have not really stopped an experienced stick fighter. Head shots and knee shots do. Even thrusts to the body, which I think can be fight stoppers, have resulted in a nasty bruise, but not stopped the fight. Just my tuppence worth. If you truly want to see what works, what's crap and what you are capable of pulling off at your body size and strength, full contact/real contact needs to be addressed. Some students may be more in love with the movie version of self defense or just want to feel they are a bad ass because they go to classes a few days a week. I say to this.... "to each his own". The trick is finding people capable of delivering the realistic pain and knowing where the danger limit is. Only stupid, self serving training partners cross that line. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing.
