MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND HAPPY, SAFE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT YEAR!!! Qoute... "Sparring sessions should, therefore, not only be conducted in an a dojo-like setting. Practitioners should also spar on hallways, doorways, stairways, back alleys, dining halls, etc" We have a small group of 5 members and one instructor in N. Las Vegas. We train, practice at a garage dojo with a side alley somewhat similar to what Jay mention below and/or at Sunset Park where we create a scenerio of a possible an assault, snatching, robbery. There we do what we need to do to deter the attack, we mostly work for Walgreen and we have what we call a off load truck night delivery at 1am. During our break we would practice our reflex and simplex techniques against possible attack from a knife or gun that mostly happen in gas stations (been there, done that), small groceries, drugstores. Below is exactly one reason why we train full contact at some point, to test our skills or techniques and discipline as it may apply in real life or in the real world. I'm 42... I mean 43 now (just turned yesterday) , a night manager of Walgreens store/pharmacy in Las Vegas and just recently on December 10 around 4:05 am a shoplifter/robber entered my store. The moment I saw him from my one way mirror and sense trouble. I'm 5'6", 140lbs, medium build and the suspect was 5'9", about 190lbs armed with a 38 revolver and a badge passing himself as a cop. He started stealing in my hardware section putting merchandise in his pockets and I watched him discreetly, gave a heads up to my night cashier that something is about to go down and signal her to call 911. Suspect tried to walk out the store and trigger my store sensors. Standard questioning and search procedure commenced, suspect refused to show ID to back up the gun and badge his wearing and started threatening not to messed with him. He started to reach for his gun and before he get to his weapon, I grabbed the suspect did a foot sweep take down, put him on a armlock and applied a rear naked choked enough to him to sleep. It was over in less than a minutes and I continued to restrained him until the police came apprehended and booked the suspect for shoplifting, robbery, illegal possession of a concealed weapon, impersonating a police officer and yes illegal possession of a control substance too (see subpoena attached). It could have been worst, someone getting hurt even dead, as associate, a customer or namely me, it was all playing in my head if I don't take him down. The point is that through disciplined training, studying and YES! sometimes competing (even in the past), I have applied my knowledge in FMA at the right place at the right time without anybody getting hurt except the suspect. We take great pride in the art specially as part of our culture and heritage. And one must developed skill on a regular basis by practice, training, attending seminar and YES! sometimes competing and full contact. "NO real to life DISCIPLINED FMA" goes out there and look for trouble, but sometimes trouble finds or come to us... Be vigilant, alert and aware of your surrounding at all time. Happy Holiday to you all!!! Jun Odal FFALV www.filipinofightingartsintl.com www.tipunan.com www.imafp.com http://martialartsfriends.com/icodale7 Go with the FLOW. The absolute Arnis commandment. With respect to the FMA, the best way would probably be to reverse-engineer the whole training process by identifying the specific threats that the practitioner would likely encounter in the street. From there, specific "confidence-building drills" should be designed to address the specific threat. This would probably result into the expansion of the range of with-protective-gear full-contact sparring competition from the current stick-vs-stick or empty hand-vs-empty hand paradigm into the more realistic stick-vs-blade, stick-vs-firearm, blade-vs-firearm, blade-vs-blade, etc. At the same time, the frequency of no-contact live weapons sparring sessions should be increased (I am assuming here that this is already part of your FMA curriculum, as should be the case). Another military training concept that can be adopted to the FMA is "on location" drills. Let's face it, what is the probability that the initial real-life application of your FMA skills will be in a dojo-like setting? On-site training on locations where you would most likely expect such incident to happen can go a long way in building your self-confidence when the "moment of truth" arrives. Sparring sessions should, therefore, not only be conducted in an a dojo-like setting. Practitioners should also spar on hallways, doorways, stairways, back alleys, dining halls, etc. > ----- Original Message ---- > From: Tarn Shadowhawk > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Sent: Friday, December 21, 2007 6:23:25 PM > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] FULL CONTACT NO RULES > > Well I train every day and I STILL don't know how I > would function in real life situation. Viñas (10-6-1991), the Founder of Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis and the father of my first Arnis teacher (Headmaster Wilson "Nonong" E. Viñas), was one of those who made pilgramages to mystic mountains on a specific time every year, from the mountains of Negros, Panay, Cebu, and even Mindanao. I would agree that the older generation of Eskrimadors had much to do with Anting-Anting, Yam-Yam, Wiri-Wiri, Amulets, etc. GM Viñas was reputed to be a member of a 12-man group of Kalaki (men of skills) who "recharge" their "power sources" in the mountains. For their case, they did met in a cave for that ocassion but they had homes where they went home to, whether in the city or in the mountain itself. (GM Viñas was represented by his students in about 5 WEKAF/DP events in the 1970s/1980s, among them was the late Grandmaster Dominador "Doming" D. Ferrer, with whom I had the fortune to also study) Another teacher of mine, Grandmaster Fortunato "Atong" Garcia (Yaming), got a Mutya which required him to make pilgramages to the mountains, again at a particular time each year. Arnisador/Eskrimador freinds and teachers of mine from different parts of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, as well as Panay and Cebu had told tales of different forms of Anting-Anting. An old story devulged that GURO/MAESTRO/MAGTUTUDLO lives in the mountain and cave in which far away from lot of people. they tend to do it is because of thier AMULATE, ORACION, ANTING ANTING. No eskrimadors lives in the mountain and cave exactly. No need to live in the mountain and cave to become an eskrimador. Most of the eskrimadors long time ago depend on anting anting and agimat or amulate or yam yam better known as oracion. but the real amulate and agimat is be yourself. No guro in nipa hat. no guro in a house. you cannot call guro or teacher to your father. if its a sign of respect when inside your home, you cannot call guro to your father but FATHER! But if you consider your father as your personal mentor perhaps it could be.it depends upon on you. If you prefer to call guro to an FMA INSTRUCTOR there's no argument on that. If we want it as a sign of respect why not SIR? its easy to understand right?. but its already there. lets leave it that way. GURO if its in tagalog. If an FMA INSTRUCTOR PREFER TO BE CALLED GURO it means that he's mentor is TAGALOG. "This is indeed a busy year for Doce Pares," said GM Cañete at the Baseline Restaurant yesterday. "We expect too many people coming. We expect around 1,000 foreign visitors for the three events." First of the three blockbuster tournaments being lined up by Doce Pares is the World Cup FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) slated on July 19-20 at the Moalboal Sports Complex. The World Cup FMA will be staged in partnership with Grandmaster Max Pallen, the originator of Senkotiros (Five Strikes). The proud Bicolano owns a huge training facility in Moalboal for Senkotiros followers and aspiring martial artists in the southernmost part of Cebu Province. Pallen established the main headquarters of his Senkotiros in 1968 in San Leandro, California. Also, the World Cup FMA serves as a tune-up for 10th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (Wekaf) Championships set from July 22 to 25 at the SM City-CebuTrade Hall. Wekaf executive director Gerald O. Cañete said the biennial World Arnis Championships, which is a highly-anticipated competition among arnis practitioners from both hemispheres of the globe, is getting bigger with 27 countries taking part in the three-day tilt. New members "This is because we have three new member countries—Taiwan (Chinese-Taipei), Guam and Chile," said the younger Cañete, who is helping out his father GM Dionnie in running the affairs of Doce Pares. Alongside the World Arnis Championships is the WEKAF World Congress on July 22. As part of its extensive selection process for the country's representatives to the Wekaf championships, a qualifying tournament will be held billed as "Quest for the Best" on Jan. 26 at SM City-Cebu. Gerald Cañete said that expected to attend the affair is Senator Juan Miguel Zubirri and noted action star Ronnie Rickets, who are both eskrima disciples. Kelii Sipin of the Milwaukee-based Four Winds Martial Arts USA, on the other hand, said their qualifying event, the US Nationals, is scheduled for Feb. 28 at the Walnut Mt. in San Antonio College. The top performers will don the United States colors in the prestigious Wekaf tilt. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
