It looks like a tree trunk, but while banana trees may be great for training Thai and FMA, I wouldn't fancy kicking an English oak tree for too long. Is it as solid as it looks? Either way, judging by the look of it, I don't fancy the shipping costs to Europe ;) Strike from the void Julian ****************************** This e-mail and any attachments are confidential and may be subject to legal privilege. Yes I did watch it, however I don't appreciate the other host (the rookie fighter and/or ex-military) mistrust or disrespect to our art or training system. During his training with the Grand Tuhon he said "I think I am being setup to fail or lose to the marines" claiming he is not being trained the best way possible for the upcoming fight. Needless to say, our art has always been bonded, founded in trust and respect. Hats off to the host of Human Weapons, they have shown respect and honor to the FMA (Eskrima) as the top weaponry of all the 15 countries they visited. They consider the art the most adaptable in real life. Yet your very right, the exposure does help FMA be known as one of the best fighting technique in the world... I think the freakin' thing was made of rattan arranged standing up around it and then covered it with canvass. perhaps the whole thing was made up of hundreds of rattan sticks inside it. it was also hang up from the ceiling. i learned that they do actually kick that monster punch bag for shin conditioning. they said that at first, some end up with bleeding shins, but you'll get used to it and toughens up your shins. i'll try to get a picture of it. these are links to the different yawyan temples: http://yawyanpasay.blogspot.com/ http://www.yaw-yan.com/ http://yawyanmusang.multiply.com/ ----- Original Message ---- From: jay de leon To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2008 3:06:04 AM Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Yaw yan kick bag julian: daniel is basically correct. if you have seen an old fashioned makiwara made up of rope or twine (yes, i used to pound on them in my youth), and picture it four sided or rounded and about 7 feet tall with a base, and then wrap the whole thing in burlap bags or rice sacks (sako in Tagalog) like a big Mexican burrito or filipino lumpia, voila, you have your basic YawYan kick bag. and yes, it is as solid (and painful) as it looks. some enterprising filipino might want to sell one to you, lol, but you can easily rig up one yourself. have fun. jay de leon www.filipinofightingartsintl.com Daniel Arola wrote: It is actually a log wrapped up in thick dockyard rope according to a former student and friend of mine of the Yaw Yan temple from back in the 80s.
