And Jon Ward, thanks for keeping me in the loop on all your great activities. I’m making it a point to attend more of them this year! FMA is certainly alive and well here in the States, as everywhere I go, I meet exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable FMA practitioners. In Vallejo, it was GM Jonathan “John” Bais, for whom I set up Philippine Martial Arts Academy (PMAA). When he left, I renamed it Philippine Martial Arts Academy & Cultural Center (PMAACC) and kept the operation going. There I met the Kombatan (still “Modern Arnis” at that time) “gang” (Andy Castillo Sr, Lito Concepcion, Alex Ercia, Ed Farris), and their “ring leader” (GM Ernesto Presas Sr) who became my mentor. When I reestablished PMAA in Pleasanton, I met Randall Chin, Ramon Espinosa, Gabe Rafael, and Darren Tibon. This year, the place is Hayward and the person is Mickey Lopez. Here’s why: Just this month, I went 50-50 with an Aikido master, JD Sandoval, to open up a school here in Hayward, CA. I moved PMAA (and IPMAF USA HQ) from Pleasanton to there. The FMA division is now in full swing with Lito as grandmaster-in-residence, Ramon, and I teaching Kombatan, Alex Ercia (ARMAS) on standby for specialized seminars (dulo-dulo, bankaw, etc). That’s the martial ART part. For martial SPORT, I’ve set up Battle Zone Sundays (drop-ins welcome!) with: Gabe Rafael (Upakan Bara-Bara) as the coach for WEKAF’s domination style of stickfighting. Everyone in the Bay Area has heard of him… As soon as I get enough sign-ups to make it worthwhile: Darren Tibon (Angel’s Disciples) as the coach for USFMAF’s point-style of stickfighting. Everyone in the Bay Area has heard of him… And then there’s someone I didn’t hear of until I set up that school in Hayward: Mickey Lopez as the coach for knife fighting events such as the Cold Steel Challenge. I expected my first session with him to be an eye-opener, and he didn’t disappoint. This year will be “The Year of the Knife” for me. (GM Bais (welcome back from abroad!), Roger Agbulos, Felix Valencia, and Ed Farris, expect me come knocking on your door for daga-sa-daga training!) Come to Mick’s “Knife Concepts” training sessions every Sunday morning, 9 to 11 AM and you will see why I'm excited. Mickey btw, will be appearing on a future segment of Fight Quest where one of the stars of that show goes up emptyhanded against Mick and his knife. I haven’t seen it yet, but I suspect it will show the fallacy of (even trained martial artists) going empty-handed against a trained (emphasis on “trained”) knife wielder. Get yourself a superior weapon or get yourself out of there! I am of course aware of the hard work of Alex Ercia (all the way to the Phil) and Gabe Rafael as well. As you probably know, Roger Agbulos, Felix Valencia and Gat Puno Abon Baet (as well as Topher Ricketts) are part of my Tipunan crew, and we can always whip up an "all-blade" seminar either in southern or northern California. Just let us know .
