What do you meant by wrong people? You have to have some sort of set of parameters for defining who are the wrong people and the right people to teach the art. We may not be all on the same page when in comes to defining who are the right and wrong people to teach, especially since on this list there are people from different cultural backgrounds. Here's an example of what I mean: I'm from the Philippines. I was born here and I live here all my life. The different martial arts teachers I know of have different ways of defining the right and wrong kinds of people. One teacher defines the right kind of person to teach as being serious and reasonably good-natured. The wrong kind of person is not serious and is proud to boot. Another teacher has two levels of categories to define who to teach: firstly they have to be of the same religious background and second, they have to be reasonably good-natured. Students who convert immediately before asking to train are viewed with suspicion since the sincerity and total conviction of their conversion is under question. Yet another group (this time) will not accept anyone who is not of the same ethnic background as they are. This is significant considering that there are quite a number of different ethnnolinguistic communities, some large some small in terms of numbers here. So, for purposes of continuing this discussion, let's look at what we mean by the right kind of person and the wrong kind of person to teach. Most of us that are teaching probably already have several LEOs in the group. With the written approval of the prospective student have one of your LEO students run a background check. Not fool proof, but one more piece of input on which to base your decision. I am concerned for several reasons. Yes, they are allies. However as everybody knows, 19 of the 9/11 highjackers were from Saudi. Several of them trained at a martial arts school in Florida. I work in a field where it is possible for me or a coworker to encounter such a person. The knife techniques of Filipino martial arts in the wrong hands is a scary thought. I believe the utmost oversight is called for. He is one of the very few non-Filipino Modern Arnis masters who are held in high esteem by the Remy Presas Modern Arnis grandmasters in the Phil. He is an original Tipunan instructor. He flew from Florida to teach at my Tipunan sa Disneyland in Anaheim, California a few years ago, on his own dime. I did not have to pay or reimburse him a single centavo. Just for that alone, and the hours of instruction from him, and his friendship, I am forever in his debt. He also happens to teach as well in the Middle East, in Israel to be exact. He teaches at the highest level of the military and secret service agencies in Israel. He walks the talk. Anyway, he wrote me an email about teaching abroad in response to our discussion here. I found it very enlightening and relevant to our discussion. So with his permission, I am reprinting it here. Jay de Leon www.filipinomartialartsmuseum.com P.S. The Commandments he mentions is his popular annual camp in Israel, the Commandments of Steel, teaching high-level, blade oriented combatives in a historical setting in Israel. He sends me an invitation every year. It is on my Bucket List. Bram, be patient, I will make it there yet, God willing. Jay: I once asked the Israeli's ( you can fill in the alphabet soup group) if it was OK for me to accept and go teach the Saudis..I expected half heartedly a resounding "of course not' but they didn't say that at all. They said sure..Go teach the Saudis..teach in Jordan or Egypt... I was surprised but they explained that martial arts were not their worry and that sports and martial arts had a way of bringing closer ties and understanding. That most martial arts actually teach control & respect..and Arnis is one of those... Now teaching known terrorist groups..Hamas, Al Fatah, et al..that's a no go.... Your responding question / point was well taken..Most of us aren't teaching overseas..( well OK I do..ROFL)How can we be sure that those we teach HERE aren't the bad guys..people who will use the skills against our own people for their own gain.. Obviously we can't know for sure and we have to trust our own judgement: good or bad.. Godofredo Fajardo's choice to teach in the Middle East may be fraught with danger, political issues etc.. but the other side of the coin is the respect and traditions he shares with them. The ability to make friends and hopefully a way or path of understanding as Arnis is the common bond breaking through the bias of culture or religion.. Please give him my best regards.. Bram PS: The 10th Commandments are April 4-5 with a trip April 6th through Dead Sea, Massada, Sea of Galilee and up to and ending in Jerusalem for he late afternoon and evening.. I hope you and Mitch can come! --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 17:33:19 +0000 From: iPat To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] World Of Martial Arts Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net gurU Ray! I have been honored and privileged to study under Sensei and GM Godofredo Fajardo when I was in the Philippines. He have always instilled and developed in the training not just the techniques but the importance of honor, discipline and values of a true Filipino Martial Artist. Martial Arts whether it is Filipino Martial Arts or another has been a tool of trade even in the old days. As an ambassador representing his country by using the art and culture as a way to build a bridge between diversities or other culture. As the great late Bruce Lee said "It is a way of expression" of who you are and what we are about. http://www.stage6.com/user/SKOBIN/video/1236630/Bruce-Lee---The-Lost-Interview We take great pride and joy of our history, culture and art that we simply have to share the beauty of it. Yet we are selective and have discretion on who we teach. We evaluate the candidate, student per say on there motive for training and learning the art. The study of FMA also help develop discipline, character, self confidence and more. Practical self defense applicable in sport and/or the street essential in our time. Could it fall in the wrong hands? Yes it could, I believe in individual soul liberty that a man has a right to choose what he wants to believe, a path of honor or destruction... but as long there is great, dedicated, discreet and wise teachers, guros, grandmasters out there, it will be at a minimum.
