One of the gang members was apparently an escrima practitioner who had competed and done well in the uk there were pictures of him with sticks etc. My question is how do we know that if we teach someone who is apparently good at the onset, can we stop he or she being influenced by others outside of the martial arts with a more sinister intent later in the future? > From: airyu@hotmail.com> To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net> Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 13:25:28 +0000> Subject: [Eskrima] Who to Teach> > Hello All,> > Interesting topic “Who to Teach”!> > Over the years the problem of teaching the “wrong” person has come up in> various manners. A student of mine has first hand experience of this. The reality of knife confrontations is that they are ambushes, assassinations, not duels. The more awareness you have of this and situations where you are most vulnerable, the better. As for teaching the 'wrong' sort, I find the best way is to use your gut. One of my guys (mentioned above) was doing really well in my group, he showed maturity, integrity and above all, honour. Then he told me he'd been in prison. My brain sparked, but my intuition still persuaded me to trust him. Saying that, I've not taught him any of the offensive knife drills and draws! Yet. I played with it once with warm tap water and it is quite effective. My training partner FREAKED out when he got hit in the face with what he thought was 190 degree Starbucks.(Not a plug you understand, just that they brew hotter than anyone else!) He turtled-up trying to protect his eyes and gave me any target that I could have wanted to hit. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net How effective is Serrada Eskrima? How does it compare to other forms of Eskrima? I have been a Serrada Eskrima for about 1 1/2 years now and I find the art fairly effective when apply to regular street fighting. The core of the system is the stick fighting which translates to empty hand but, what I would like to know is how does it compare to the other forms of eskrima. Any thoughts??? --__--__-- Message: 6 Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Eskrima - Serrada Eskrima. I'm very biased toward Inayan Serrada, but I have also studied other forms of Eskrima. Serrada's focus is on "the stick is a blade". Other arts focus on the stick as a stick. Others on no stick whatsoever, knives only. As an all 'round art, I find it perhaps the best FMA that I have come across. I'm sure other will disagree. But for one art that works well for blade, stick, and empty hand in one set of responses to an attack, I haven't seen anything that compares. There are a lot of Serrada teachers out there, some with very limited experience with full-contact full-speed "interpersonal encounters". So YMMV based on the instructor and their background. But that is no different from any other martial art, FMA or otherwise. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello All, Sorry to interrupt all the "killing" talk, but I'm in need of the healing side of our arts. My folks are in town for a couple of weeks, and having flown in from Hawaii, they're not acclimated to the colder climes of Northern California. My mom in particular has been having issues with her arthritis and bursitis. Does anybody know of a manghihilot operating in the Bay Area? We're in San Jose so somebody in the south bay is preferred but I'm willing to drive an hour out of our way for a good hilot (especially of the bisaya/cebuano persuasion). Please e-mail me back if you know of somebody.
