In fact, he used to teach TKD in the ROK Army. Somehow, he came across as someone who understands the difference between Street TKD and Sport TKD. In all likelihood, Street or Combatives-based TKD still exists in the military establishments of the 2 Koreas. The TKD which most of the world now know is probably just the "export" version. The best analogy would be comparing USAF F-15s with "export" version F-15s... > > Message: 5 > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] A Tale of Two Tournaments > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2008 19:26:08 -0800 (PST) > From: rterry@idiom.com (Ray) > Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > > > The future is within the youth! If you raise him in the urban hovels of the world, he will probably be just as tough as any other street kid out there... =[:->] My point is, age should not become an obstacle in evaluating the fighting expertise of a student. This is particularly true with weapons-based MA styles. A Katana cut delivered by a 13-year old would not be that much different by one delivered by a 30-year old. A .45 ACP round fired by a 10-year old would have no difference at all with one fired by an adult. Some people are mentally ready for the life of a warrior at 9, some at 13, some at 21, some at 45, some will just die without ever making the grade. The most famous child warrior in history is not even Musashi the Samurai. I think it is an ex-shepherd named David who killed an oversized warrior named Goliath.... =[:->] If you don't train your little ones at a young age, you will never know whether you have a David or Musashi in your hands... > > Message: 6 > Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2008 13:30:59 -0800 (PST) > From: B Katz > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] A Tale of Two Tournaments > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > > I wholeheartedly agree that the youth is the future! Every male in South Korea has to either do time in the military, be a police volunteer or perform some such service for a few years. If they join the military, even those without prior Taekwondo training, exit basic training with a 1st Dan (Il Dan). As a result 99% of all South Korean men are black belts. Taekwondo is only a very recent addition to the martial sports of North Korea. Gen. Choi introduced his non-sport ITF Taekwondo to the North perhaps 10 or so years ago. I've had to opportunity to travel to South Korea and train with some of the best there. Unfortunately all they are really interested in is sport. Those that are more into self defense and combat learn Hapkido, as invented by my HKD instructor JI Han-jae. fwiw... There is a little McDojo around the corner from my house. It is infested with little rug rats that think they are Chuck Norris. Saddly, the "Master" has decided to add "stickfighting" to his curriculum. I'm quite convinced that no good can come from this. He has managed to instill a false sense of confidence in his students already. My son attends school with a kid that had his first Dan before he was in middle school. His white belt isn't even the slightest bit dirty. In a way I'm happy that all these kids hang out at this particular academy... it makes my son's eskrima that much more effective when he encounters a bully. Maybe I am a bit elitist and snobbish when it comes to our art, but I also believe that not everyone should be gun owners and/or parents as well. I would be wounded to the core of my soul to see another great combat tradition watered down to make it palatable for mass consumption... www.eskrimacustoms.com Fine hand-crafted hardwood bastons and training knives --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2008 13:42:18 -0800 (PST) From: Mike Casto Subject: Re: [Eskrima] A Tale of Two Tournaments and David and Goliath To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net LOL. We used to have a TKD school down the street from our school. We used to see TKD guys standing across the street - wearing their gis, even - and watching us train through the windows. An hour later, as we drove home, we would see these guys trying to teach what they'd watch us doing. But none of them actually came in and trained with us to really get the material. It was pathetic.
