As a Bogoy growing up in Iloilo, we have this " street lingo" we adopted to primarily hide our intent/purpose/pretense/be different/etc.. Earlier form and a bit like the Ebonics of today. patay kon patay - to the death bira-bira /or sige-sige- lets do it more tsimay - chicks atab - inverted for girl/boy friend goli - inverted for to take a bath atik - money tsabong - food kwela - your'e OK mano-mano - man to man kwidaw - be careful Stir - to bluff tusok - blade or knife === Yeah, so many base on locality and dialects... jorge penafiel ========= Tagalog words or phrases are usually repeated for the following reasons: (1) for emphasis. example: punong-puno (really full), malaking malaki (really big). the single or root words can stand alone--puno is full and malaki is big. (2) a word repeated followed by the suffix -an means artificial or pretend. example : bahay-bahayan (pretending to play house), datu-datuhan (pretending to be a datu). (3) to denote two things. example: dulo-dulo (literally, point-point, so two points,in tagalog). my guro calls it dos puntas (two points, spanish converted to tagalog usage). it might even be more than two things. example: turo-turo (literally, point-point with your finger). a turo-turo is a restaurant similar to a buffet restaurant where you point to your food choices--which means that you will probably point at least twice, maybe even more. There are some tagalog words that are repeated, but the root word does not mean anything by itself. example - paru-paro (butterfly), guni-guni (imagination), tingting (type of broom), etc. Any other contributions? Ideally, you must have a resident guide who knows the unadvertised but renowned Arnisadors/Eskrimadors in the locality and who also can protect you from "bad elements." These Arnisadores/Eskrimadores are usually only known by fellow FMAers or people in their community. Prof. Bot has alot of contacts in Manila, being an expert practitioner of LSAI/LESKAS, Ngo Cho Kun, and Pencak Silat among others. And his profession as an anthropologist would be a big help. You can also PM GP Abon Baet if he is in Paete, Laguna. He is known to have organized that the Arnisadores in his area. For the Cebu area, Dr. Ned R. Npangue, the author of Cebuano Eskrima: Beyond the Myth, had done intensive field research on the unpublisized Eskrimadores. When i was there for 3 days, he had brought me to 6 groups. I can introduce you to different personalities here in Negros and certain parts of Pany when you can drop by. Just as a point of reference. Manila-Bacolod by plane is about an hour. Cebu-Bacolod by land is 9 hours, less than an hour by plane. Bacolod-Dumaguete is about 5 hours by lanmd. Bacolod-Iloilo by fastcraft is an hour. Would also help if you can define the scope limitation of your field study. What type of Arnis would you want - competitive, combative, cultural... indigenous or foreign influenced...stick or blade based...In that way you'll get maximum result from your trip. Hope this helps. God bless. James U. Sy Jr. Jesse Sandow wrote: Hello James, WOW! Thanks very much...Where do you think I should star? If we were to believe the tale about the 10 Bornean Datus and them bringing their fighting arts to the islands, then we can assume that there will be a high concentration of said arts in the areas where they populated. Of course, this does not imply that the Luzon and Mindanao regions do not have a rich tradition of FMA. Actually they do. Just that the visayans are more known for their FMA. Hope this helps. We had a guy around here who claimed to teach Inayan Eskrima. I stopped by his school to visit him, he had no idea Inayan encompassed anything more than Siniwali and Decuerdas! His instructor had attended a couple seminars with Suro...that was it! When I asked him if he had ever met Suro, his reply was "Suro? That's the older gentleman in the videos right?" ! I politely told him he shouldn't try to teach what he didn't know and invited him to come to one of our classes, now he is only teaching his "other" 3 arts. Sad, but he is a good salesman and there will always be people who want to "buy" an art instead of work for it! I imagine there's at least one in every town... Interestingly there are errors in some of Suro's Inayan videos that only a real Inayan would pick up on. Suro put them in so that we could tell if someone learned Inayan directly from him or only from the videos.
