You are correct sir, outside of the martial arts there are very few skilled areas of life where someone can simply proclaim himself as an expert and instructor. The free market is a great thing for the most part, but there are certinly some areas where that concept fails. There is also the fact that a good number of people who know that someone is less skilled and qualified than they claim, just look the otherway, say nothing and allow the underqualified person to contine pulling off his charade. To a great degree we often have only ourselves to blame when an under-qualified person is allowed to stay in business, keep his doors open and take students in who could/should be training elsewhere. Frank discussions would go a long ways toward putting some of these underqualified folks out of business or at the very least making the public aware of the person's lack of qualifications, then if becomes a case of "let the buyer beware". > how many of us, have slept of the floor of an arnis master to learn his style, or catch a bus to learn a new >style, or save his money to travel to study under a great master. in this country, where money can be made >everywhere, people dont want to spend $200 a month to learn from a qualified master, but he will spend $75 >for two hours of learning in a seminar, or $200 to learn from a video tape. mc dojo. Social, political and economic conditions are not equal world-wide. Doing what one must in order to get the good qualified instruction is difficult to establish as a single unified standard worldwide. However, good quality instruction is usually never cheap regardless of the culture or society. And some people are definately quite cheap and go well beyond merely pinching pennies. I have spent $200, $300 for a weekend seminar. That does not qualify me as an expert in anything. I want to buy the tapes and DVD after that, IF, I believe that the instructor provided something of value. The tape/DVD is to keep the art in front of me and gives me a chance to get more information about what I had previously studied with the master instructor. Then I have to get back with that person in 6, 9 or 12 months later to see how much progress I've actually made in understanding the art. I'm still not an expert. > last year, when i had a conversation with a teacher, who is a member of this forum, who told me, the "black >belt" is the beginning. really? since when? when you are a black belt, you are an expert. supposed. but it is >not for a beginner of the art to wear, which is the attitude, and this is why we have 7 years old 1st degree, >14 years old 4th degree, and lost interest by age 21. what makes our FMA a mc dojo? too many beginners >with no skill who now have rank to teach. who will take FMA serious with black belters who cannot fight? we >have too much of that. There really isn't anything of significance that I would disagree with in the above paragraph. When the training school is being driven by money and dreams of becoming a rich martial arts instructor, quality and good reasoning are among the first casualties right after truth and honesty. But in the end it is up to each instructor to determine what they want to their schools to be and what reputation they desire. I see the black belt as the end of the mechanical phase of training. The student is no longer moving by rote mechanics simply because that is how they were taught to move. At the point of earning a black belt, the student should be able to explain what they are doing, why they are doing it and provide at least 2 possible variations that are grounded solidly in theory as well as praticality. The newly minted black belts may not yet be experts with their first black belt but they should be far from beginners, in thought, ability and actions.
