They have no real interest or in some cases ability to teach just like the idea of being a teacher. In some repsects like a good coach the desire and ability to teach or coach is more important than fighting skill although a good knowledge base is necessary. --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! It's good to see that Guro Kim Satterfield is your instructor. I have had many private conversations (emails) with him over the years and have a high respect for him. To Guru Mike Castro, thanks also for your information. Regarding specifics, one can be vague and still be specific without fear of litigation. It's done everyday. You observe a school and rate it 5 stars or 5 sticks for being excellent or give it no stars or sticks for not being worthy to learn at. Or you could not mention or degrade any school or person at all - that is my interpretation of what Rez wrote about you in Saturday's ED: "I think Mike's attitude is the appropriate one; to focus on your own actual progress and ability in the art itself rather than get bogged down with ranks, especially the ranks of others around you and whether or not they deserve them. " I agree that we should just focus on our own training and ability and not others. But to mention a school or person and be vague is like gossip which has no real value except to show that the one making the pointless criticism has a low self-worth. Personally, I rather follow the old saying "If you can't say something good about something then don't say it at all." Respectfully, Al Sardinas A Student of the Garimot System of Arnis --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2008 16:32:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Guru Mike Casto Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Specifics To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I agree with the "can't say anything nice, say nothing" principle. I disagree with non-detailed (this doesn't necessarily mean vague) discussions being gossip. In fact, gossip usually includes the details about who, what, when, where. What I'm talking about is giving all the detail I want except for identifying a specific instructor/school. Discussions of this nature can help people figure out what to look for and help them spot a shady instructor/school. I never said mention a specific school and be vague on the details. I said be specific on the details but don't identify the school/instructor.
