I have a deep respect for you as well, and especially Garimot Arnis from the DVD you sent me. Your teacher is not only a talented martial artist, but the sense of humor he shows while teaching is priceless. He could take his comedy act on the road as well!! It's good to see that Guro Kim Satterfield is your instructor. I have had many private conversations (emails) with him over the years and have a high respect for him. I tried using or saying that with my wife... didn't work!:-) I couldn't agree more on this last few statement "...focus on your own actual progress and ability in the art itself rather than get bogged down with ranks, especially the ranks of others around you and whether or not they deserve them". Be ever learning with a heart of a teacher and student at the same time, humble and true to the art, yet being vigilant, alway ready to stand up and answer the call when needed to prove your ability whether by mind or body or both. Honorable enough to accept a challenge and courage to face defeat with honor also. I guess a little background is in order, as much as my short term memory recall: -Late start at 13 years old- Diliman Shotokan Karate-do Phil. Practice Modern Arnis with my son and my "chopstick" technique on all the Chinese food I can put in my mouth (yumyum). -From Los Angeles to Newport News, Virginia, trained with Filipino Navy friends from Guam, freestyle fighting, modern arnis and wrestlings (dumog). -Virginia to Las Vegas present time, started FFALV with the permission of my GM Godo and guidance of Master Jay de Leon. I disagree with non-detailed (this doesn't necessarily mean vague) discussions being gossip. In fact, gossip usually includes the details about who, what, when, where. What I'm talking about is giving all the detail I want except for identifying a specific instructor/school. Discussions of this nature can help people figure out what to look for and help them spot a shady instructor/school. I never said mention a specific school and be vague on the details. I said be specific on the details but don't identify the school/instructor. Personally, I rather follow the old saying "If you can't say something good about something then don't say it at all." Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net i think if we are teachers of the martial arts, you cannot allow somebody elses bad opinion of you to hurt your fellings, we are supposed to be tougher than that. so, some guy doesnt like you, or he doesnt think your art is very good, so what? isnt this what we think of other styles that we dont study? i know i do philippine martial arts, because i think its better than other styles, that's why i do it. why should i keep this to myself? if a kung fu or tkd or japanese style thinks his art is better than mine, then good for him. he is suppose to feel that way, he is a kung fu man. even if he said this in a internet forum, good for him. martial artist today, is too weak and their feelings get hurt too easy. they dont speak there minds like men, they compliment when they dont feel that way, they keep the opinon to himself because he doesnt want to offend people, or is scared somebody is going to challenge him on his opinon. or, they think "hey, we are martial artists, we are supposed to respect each other". well this isnt boy scouts, if you are afraid to speak your mind in public like men, then you will talk behind their backs like women. it is our history that makes the filipino art such a strong type of martial arts. two teachers in the same town think he is better than the other. so, they get together to see who is best. this is the kind of rivalry that makes boys into men. even if the relationship between them becomes very bad (arjuken vs yaw yan, fernando vs lao, canete vs ilustrisimo), they both walk with their heads high all the way into old age, and there is TRUE respect between them. not like the JKD guy who compliments another style, but tells his student there is a better way to do this. arts develop when people look at another one, and says, i dont think you can beat me with that. then the other guy says, oh yeah, lets see. what happens is, both teachers do not have to wonder or hide their opinons, and they both get better at their art because they found out who is stronger in which way. when it comes to opinion about martial arts, i hope everybody thinks the style they study is best. especially if you are teaching. now, if a student asks, is this school any good, you should not be so cowardly to say, make you own mind when you think he sucks (or worst, to say he is "good" when you dont think so), or send a private email and say he is not. what's the teacher going to do? show up at your house to fight you? sue you in court? come one. he asked the opinion, give it to him. see this site: http://www.martialtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11140&highlight=sacramento they are asking about a techer in my area that i belive is mc dojo, he has some of the worst students i seen with a black belt, but there is good in everything. i notice how some people change the way they talk when a kid came into the conversation, and i think this was a good time to bite your tongue. BUT do not be afraid to speak your mind, even if it might hurt some feelings. now, if you just dont like to say mean things, then that's fine. never say them. but i think there some of you will not say them in public what you will say behind closed doors, and thats worse. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray To: Eskrima-Digest Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2008 12:16:19 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Cebu Doce Pares seminar Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net ESKRIMA SEMINAR Sun Star Cebu Stickfighters from eight countries, together with practitioners from the Philippines, converged in Cebu City last week to attend a three- day martial arts gathering hosted by the Cacoy Doce Pares Eskrima.
