Oh hold on - wait a minute! Gat Puno, you're not just a good cook, but a Cordon Bleu *instructor*?!? Wow. Talk about a man of many talents! I have *got* to get down to Florida to meet you, sir! Some day. Seriously, to be able to ask for a chance to train in both FMA AND food with a teacher of your level? That's almost too good to be true! Anyway, back to regular topics now... Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net The first thing she should do is contact her Home Country's embassy. Normally, they would have some kind of an emergency number available for their citizens. The next thing she should do is to establish connections in trustworthy local social networks. In her particular case, this would probably be the following: 1. Her Home Country's expatriate association 2. Her School 3. The local chapter of her Church (if applicable) >From such connections, she will be able to get "dos" and "don'ts" that are particularly suited for her specific socio-cultural situation. Like any other place in the world, what is "risky" and "not risky" in the Philippines can be very relative (depending on the degree of "risk" that one is comfortable with). As a general rule, however, the level of "risk" significantly increases once retail establishments close down for the night (about 9PM in Metro Manila and about 7PM in the provinces) and the number of people in the streets (i.e. potential witnesses) are much fewer. It would also be prudent not to "flash" anything expensive (e.g. jewelry, cellphones, PDAs, etc.) while you are in public places or riding public transportation (yes, including taxi cabs). > > Message: 1 > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > From: Nick Wollenberg > Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2008 01:46:10 +0100 > Subject: [Eskrima] Tips for safe traveling in the Philippines? > Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > > Hello everybody, > > please excuse that my first appearance on the digest is not strictly > about FMA, it's just that I think it is the perfect place to get some > comments on safe traveling in the Philippines. Definitely some things in there I wouldn't have thought of… I'll be sure to pass it along. Especially the point about chocolate as a gift: if most Filipinos like chocolate, she'll fit right in. ;-) Thanks also to those who contacted me off-list, if the digest is any indication of general friendliness and helpfulness in the Philippines, it seems she (and I) will not have to worry. Blancia Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To straighten up the records: TheLegendary Grandmaster Angel Lumogdang Blancia is a World War II USAFFE Veteran Guerilla Fighter against the Japanese invadersof the Philippines He hailed from Culasi, Antique, Panay Island, Philippines a coastal town in the Northern part of the Province of Antique where the legendary Mount Madia-as is located. (Note: Mt.. Madia-asin the "Maragtas" kang Panay) He was taken from his parents by his grandfather at a very young age andtrained him to be the door keeper of their Family Martial Arts"Traditional Eskrima Filipino Martial Arts System", Esoteric Arts, and Healing Arts. After World War II he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he was able to pit his Filipino indigenous skills against the Okinawan Martial Arts Mastersand was honored to be accepted as a Filipino member of "Shobukai" aMartial Arts Masters Association in Okinawaheaded then by Funakoshi Gichen. With him in Japanwas also a legendary undefeated Great "Dumog" Champion -Isidoro"Doroy" Amar of Tibiao, Antique .. He was so famous not only in thePhilippines then but also in Japan, such that when he returned to thePhilippines he ran and won as the Municipal Mayor of Tibiao, Antique,Panay Island Philippines.(Neighboring town of Culasi) Grandmaster Angel L. Blancia is also adept in the grappling arts, the art ofpressure point touching and striking both in healing "Hilot" bonesetting, “Pamulong” meridian alignment and killing art or "Pang-halit"Death Touch. With his martial arts skills and fluency in Japanese language and other Asianlanguages, he became a member of the US covert operations group in theOrient after WWII He has traveled extensively and have very in-depth knowledge of both Japaneseand Chinese secretive Internal Arts. After his tour of duty in the Orient he operated the first Kung-Fu Club inIloilo City, Panay, Island, Philippines during the late 1950's known it hasdifferent names in different places but collectively he called it "Forbidden Oriental Fighting Arts Association" where Chinese Kung Fu,Tibetan Raja Yoga, and Traditional Filipino Eskrima Arts are taught. The clubwas first at Huervana St., La Paz, IloiloCity though he traveled and teach notonly in Panay but also in Negros Island. In the latteryears classes transferred to homes & different places, YMCA Bldg Iloilo,Bo. Obrero, Lapuz, Jereos Lapaz, Benedicto, Jaro, later Sto. NinoVilla-Arevalo, Iloilo City. Some of hissurviving disciples still teach independently singly and or collectively in thedifferent areas of specialization that they've learned, although most of themnot openly. He was a very traditional and a secretive teacher especially in terms withunloading the depths and vastness of his knowledge and teachings. He has lotsof students but very selective in accepting indoor disciples even with hisimmediate family members that non among them have passed the tests. In fact, none among his immediate family members was lucky enough to be able to receive, grasp enough nor fathom the depths of the skill and art of their father inOriental Fighting Arts. Note: I've been under the tutelage of Grandmaster Angel L. Blancia since1979 till his death in 1988 and never did he made ridiculous claim to be the father nor founder of "Filipino Martial Arts", such ignorantclaims by other parties to bring credibility to their group, system or person is agreat disservice, insult, and dishonor to one of the Legendary Grandmasters ofFilipino Martial Arts that ever lived..
