Although I am not a datu, I am a senior student of the late Grand Master Remy A. Presas and I am familiar with the title. The key thing to whatever title you use, in my opinion, is that one uses it to promote the art and ensure they are a good reflection on their teacher, their art and their own personal school. I teach Arnis in my home, The fee is very reasonable....$ 0.00, I ask that you attended when the time is agreed on, or let me know if you cannot make the class, I teach 2-3 only, I do not have any students now, so, first come first serve, There is an interview during initial meeting. When you attended first session, that doesn't mean you are a student. You may not like me and so forth, so we will sit, talk and see how things go. I live in Chesapeake Virginia. And we have some Supreme Grandmasters and thousands of Soke Dockey in the Japanese inspired/influenced/derived martial arts. Lee Won-Kuk, Byung Yoon-In, Hwang Kee, Choi Hong-Hi, Choi Young-Sul, Kano Jigoro, Funakoshi Gichin, Oyama Masutatsu, etc. didn't have such titles but still live to this day in the new generation that continues their legacies. James U. Sy Jr. Tom Howanic wrote: I agree that the "Title" issue is not unique to the FMA. There is a well known Korean martial artists that is calling himself the "Eternal Grand Master!" Google it. GM Presas didn't use the title Datu for himself. He was a PE teacher at the Criminology Department of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) in Bacolod City. He would have been a laughing stock of the academe if he did. James U. Sy Jr. Derobio Man wrote: We wonder if Dr. Presas used the datu title while he was still living in the islands. Marinas, Glad that you are back on us, thank you for etemology of Gatpuno. ? Kapaid Jay de Leon, The offer still on, whenever we got a chance to meet again in California. By the way GM Rolan Dantes and his student from Autralia David Foggie, is on their way to Paete, Laguna to set an interview to other Maestro's of town in Magdalena, Luban, Luisiana, Majayjay, and Paete. GM Rolan Dantes and his student want to help expose other Maestro of Arnis that hids in the middle of the "Sierra Madre Mountain" of Luzon. This is great for the Maestros of Laguna I think, Not: This Maestro is not Garimot Arnis practitioner, they "Maestro" on their rights and own family arts. Kapatid George, Thank for very kind and supporting words. My offer is not only to Kapatid jay, is extended to all, if they want to experienced a good tasting "traditonal" food of the Philippines, specially Pansit Lug-log, Pansit Bihon, Pansit Ulam, (Different Filipino Noodle Dish), Dinuguan (Chocolate Soup), Pinaes na Hipon, (Coconut Shrimp with Pineapple), Kalderet (Goat Stew), Bakareta (Goat Stew),? Apritadang Manok, Baboy, Isda and Hipon, ?(Chicken, Pork, Fish and Shrimp Sweet and Sour Stew ) Mga Sinabawan (soups) like Mulo, Bulalo, Arozcaldo, Goto and more.?During our Gatehring GAT-Summer Retreat?every July,?everyone?besides enjoying the training, they enjoy "Traditional" Filipino food to eat at Lunch, and now I am offering a "Cooking": lesson?to all interested during my visit to their?place.?Again, offer is extended to all interested.. In regards of Titles, it so hard for me to used the title on the begginning, sp[ecially here in the US,?If I let them call me "master" what my?name would be "Master?BaXX", or if I used the title Grandmaster,?so they calling me "Grandmaster BaXX".?That the reason why its hard for me to promote someone in "Balckbelt", becaused I was not given a belt of my "Maestros", but I was given a "Belt" in Modern Arnis that I feel not deserved it, becaused I only learn from few lesson, from Willy Annang and the Book,?oh I alway?forget to mentioned also that I?was guide few days with "Carlito Bonjoc" I dont even know that his name, when they visited Paete, on 1977,?I only know him as "Lito" and his partner at that time?is "Boy" Tolentino. I was 14 yrs old at that time. Only now I see the clips and I recognized?GM Carlito Bonjoc" is the same"Lito" that I know..?If he has student over in this list, please kindly say hello for me and nice to see him continues practiced the arts of Professor Re my Presas. But again, I feel that I dont deserved to be a "Blackbelt" in Modern Arnis even now, even Professor Remy was?offered me on 1993?to be one of his "Highest"?ranking blackblet in "Modern Arnis in America, I turned it?down that offer. Besauced I know I dont?deserve that title, but I was platter and thankful, but no thank you. Professor was heart broken, but it is what it is, cant accept it, sorry. So this is not make me less "fighter" or even less knowledge in the arts. just me, I cant see myself calling my-self that I know? "modern Arnis wholesome" ?I dont earned it and dont?deserve it, I know their are better student that deserved that title.? ?? Title is important to one "organization' to set a tune of "Leadership", sense of "seiority', but nothing else. I see practitoner that get beat their behind by younger and novice practitioners of the arts. Becaused "Title" dont make you a good fighter, but it set a tune to keep the level of profeciency to title holder atleast on my personal opinion. But I also agree that a lot of them have a bigger title than they are.. Well, just enjoy them and live with it,,, Thank again, mga Kapatid, Palaging Gumagalang, (Respectfully yours?always), Gat Puno Abon "Garimot' Baet Laguna Arnis Federation International Garimot Arnis Training Group International Harimaw Buno Federation? What's really in the diversity of Titles? Titles are given as acknowledgment to give honor & credence to one's accomplishments. It is also a benchmark of one's placement and growth in the field pursued, ethnic group, lineage or system. The growing diversity actually bespeaks of the inherent ingenuity & creativity of Filipino Martial Artists. So lets enjoy the use of it, if it's the consequence of growth & if it is a way to bring harmony & unity amidst our diversity Kruhayyy to everybody!
