Let me see, who would I recommend there? Oh yeah, Guru Mike Casto teaches in Louisville. Seriously, though, Mike has been a good friend of mine and a brother in the martial arts for several years now, and you cannot go wrong training with him. He is knowledgeable, personable, an absolute blast to train with, and besides being an all-around good guy, a phenomenal martial artist as well. You are going to think you fell into a gold mine when you meet him, the guy is simply amazing. Mike has already posted his contact info, get with him ASAP. You will enjoy it, Mike can take you as far in the martial arts as you want to go. Most likely, since the sticks were varnished, they were probably dried in the sun hence the proneness to cracking. To: Subject: [Eskrima] Kali training & Dealing with the Suits Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Eric, My suggestion is when dealing with the "suits" to alleviate their fears, I would suggest that you use the USFMAF system for point sparring with the Smak Stiks. They are almost unbreakable but will not injure your students. When coupled with a WEKAF style helmet and gloves, it has proven to be very safe. The sparring is done from a blade concept- 2 minute round point system with the first one to seven strikes/cuts wins. This is how my friend Darren Tibon, the President of USFMAF sold the idea originally to Disney. They are very big on safety & liability. My reply: I may have worded it wrong, though I thought I was correct. The excerpt below in italics is what I was trying to get across. I wrote to Cane Masters ( as I am studying the cane) and they replied such: "As far as the rubber tip goes, we haven't heard any word that definitively states a cane must have a rubber tip on it to be "legal" but it doesn't make sense not to have a rubber tip; it would be very slippery on any hard surface, plus the end would be more apt to be damaged (speaking about a wood cane here). In my judgment, the perception of having a cane on your person without a rubber/protective tip would lend it to be viewed as more than a walking/support device, and thus, if used for self defense, could be construed as more of an offensive versus defensive weapon. " That's what I was trying to say...that the cane without the rubber tip could be construed as a weapon and not just an ordinary walking stick.
