Thanks for all the replies for the wood question. Someone suggested "bahi", which is great but IS very vulnerable to termite/wood bug infestation (as with rattan), which leads me to another question: How do you protect your cane from termites? Organic solutions preferred... take care! tenrec@avcorner.com tenrec2@yahoo.com tenrec2@gmail.com --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 07:16:35 +0100 From: tenrec To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] cebu or metromanila Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Yehey! On where a good place to settle down in the PI: Mr Elrik Jundis ( Tue, 15 Apr 2008 21:06:13 -0700 [Eskrima] Cebu or Manila to live and train in FMA) made a whole truckload of excellent points on "things to consider when moving to the PI." His explanation on training in Arnis and FMA were spot on, so pay particular attention to what he wrote on training in multiple styles. There are a number of schools/styles that will not accept "cross-enrollees" as a matter of policy (which I understand is not the case in US/Europe-based.). In my limited experience, this is more likely to be the case with styles/schools that are 1) are family/clan styles 2) are run by the original GM and/or older Masters and Chief Instructors 3) older, more traditional styles Metro Manila seems to have more schools run by younger instructors who subscribe to training in multiple styles and mixing martial arts. These schools might be more open to cross trainers. (This is just a casual observation, I don't have any real data to back this up, so nobody flame me :-) ) . Also, Arnis schools are so far apart in Metro Manila, which is a problem when you factor in the traffic (and remember: Manila only has two kinds of traffic: bad and really really bad) The main places you'relikely to find FMA in MM on any given day are in Quiapo, Cubao and within the universities (which usually have a Modern Arnis, Lightning Scientific or Leskas Arnis Club branch). On sundays - Luneta/Quirino Grandstand and the Quezon City Circle are like FMA fiestas. Mr J is correct also in suggesting that you may have to travel to other parts of Luzon (outside of MM) to find other schools, that can mean travelling rather far distances. Cebu is relatively smaller, and I think the Arnis schools there are clumped closer together (at least according to my instructors who were from there) . A friend and fellow student used to call Cebu (and the Visayas in general) the "hotbed of Arnis." I think its safe to say that the FMA distribution in Cebu is "denser"... or chunkier... And as Mr J put it well in his statement "For many, your training community becomes your new family". A little respect can go a long way . If you plan to be a paladin kind of student, don't diss the schools you move on from. Mr J also wrote: > (Ok maybe not 50/50 but if you are looking it's high). >In the late 80's my father had asked a cab driver in Cebu to take him to an >Escrima master - of course the other drivers said to see Doce Pares. But my >dad decided to go with this old man who had a certain look to him. He ended >up taking my dad to meet GM Ondo Caburnay of Lapunti Arnis - The Driver turned >out to be his Ondo's Dad - Filemon the original GM. Ohhhh... so that's how you guys ended up at Lapunti : ) great story! btw what part of the PI did you move to? take care and good luck! tenrec@avcorner.com tenrec2@yahoo.com tenrec2@gmail.com take care and good luck! tenrec@avcorner.com tenrec2@yahoo.com tenrec2@gmail.com --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 07:15:39 +0100 From: tenrec To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] thanks and legal questions Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net yehey! Thanks again for the cane wood suggestions and for the wood care tips as well, which was going to be my next question :-) On allied topics that came up: I'm a bit confused, canes may have rubber tips but walking sticks may not? Isn't a walking stick the same thing as a cane (30-35 inches in length or thereabouts), or is it supposed to mean a "hiking stick" (44 inches up to 6 feet)? Also on the legality of using canes and sticks for self defense: from an article I read a long time ago in Black Belt (or maybe in this digest, not sure anymore) I understand that any strikes to the head and neck region by any object (stick, cane, umbrella) can be construed as assault with a weapon in court, at least in US courts... is this correct? any updates or clarifications? Also: I'm working on a simple homebrew project now (mainly out of curiosity, partly out of boredom), which is making my own walking cane out of NGO rattan supplied by my late training partner and compadre. He got it from a store near the Ateneo in QC; they're very good quality and cut in varying lengths, (not just the 28 inchers you normally find in tourist shops, under the Quiapo bridge, etc.). The one I'm working on is a good 33 inch straight shaft, with a "barber pole" woodburning pattern on it. So far I've added a tip on one end. (and that's it! : -) ) I'm thinking I should add a handle, sort of like the ball handle on my kamagong cane... also maybe adding a wrist strap of some sort... take care all and thanks! tenrec tenrec@avcorner.com tenrec2@yahoo.com tenrec2@gmail.com --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] thanks and legal questions Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 06:18:59 -0700 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > I'm a bit confused, canes may have rubber tips but walking sticks > may not? The target of your attack is irrelevant, it could still be construed as assault with a deadly weapon. imho --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Marc Denny" To: Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 13:16:37 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Dog Brothers Martial Arts seminars Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Woof All: Here's a list of the seminars I will be doing in the near future, including one this Sunday at Surf Dog's school in Hemet: The Adventure continues!
