Recently, an anniversary party was held at the association's headquarters, the Daguhoy Lodge, a two-story building at Hunter and Hazelton streets in Stockton's historic Little Manila neighborhood. "We not only teach the martial art," Grand Master Tony Somera said, "but we teach the martial art history and the martial art culture." The association was founded in 1968 by Leo Giron, a Stockton native and World War II veteran. He called it Bahala Na - which means "Come what may" - after the slogan of his military company. Somera was promoted to grand master in 1999. For four decades, Bahala Na has trained hundreds of students - affiliate schools have opened throughout the country and internationally - and has contributed to the preservation of Stockton's Filipino history. The Daguhoy Lodge, for example, houses a museum of documents as well as artifacts that were left behind by the agricultural workers who once gathered there. "I love it," Somera said. "I think for me, I actually train because I want to learn more about the culture and the history. But I also want to share that with the next generation of people. If we don't, the art is lost, the history is lost." --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2008 11:38:07 -0700 From: Eskrima-FMA To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Misunderstood Imelda Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I viewed an interesting film on PBS the other day. http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/imelda/index.html It was about Imelda "I've been very misunderstood" Marcos. Shot by cinematographer Ferne Pearlstein in 16-millimeter film and awarded a Sundance 2004 prize for excellence in cinematography, IMELDA is a visually stunning look at one of the world's most reviled and revered women. Filmmaker Ramona Diaz and her crew shot the majority of IMELDA in 1998 and 2001. An interesting glimpse into a part of the history of the Philippines.
