Recently, an anniversary party was held at the association's headquarters, the Daguhoy Lodge, a two-story building at Hunter and Hazelton streets in Stockton's historic Little Manila neighborhood. "We not only teach the martial art," Grand Master Tony Somera said, "but we teach the martial art history and the martial art culture." The association was founded in 1968 by Leo Giron, a Stockton native and World War II veteran. He called it Bahala Na - which means "Come what may" - after the slogan of his military company. Somera was promoted to grand master in 1999. For four decades, Bahala Na has trained hundreds of students - affiliate schools have opened throughout the country and internationally - and has contributed to the preservation of Stockton's Filipino history. The Daguhoy Lodge, for example, houses a museum of documents as well as artifacts that were left behind by the agricultural workers who once gathered there. "I love it," Somera said. "I think for me, I actually train because I want to learn more about the culture and the history. But I also want to share that with the next generation of people. If we don't, the art is lost, the history is lost." _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list, 2500 members Eskrima@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Re: Bahi/Oil (GatPuno@aol.com) Gat Puno Abon "Garimot" Baet wrote "air betilation" ! ; ) Spoken in true pinoy form ; ) Too classic hehehehe Just wanted to pipe in here and notate that our buddy Nick aka *pappydog* from KIL also makes really good hardwood canes from hickory. They tend to be a bit bigger in width than what you may be used to with the rattan and my bahi but they hold up great to all the bashing and smashing. Some friends and I had also taken the liberty to take a really sharp kukri and a big 5 sporting goods cheapee bolo (which did not hold up to well against the hickory I might add eheh) to the KIL sticks and the KIL sticks held up to several blows although the kukri did do some cleaving on the stick but held up to where it was not severed in half or slashed to the point of weakened and ultimately useless to defend with which I thought was really interesting... Anyway give em a try if your so inclined n tell my buddy Pappy I said hi if you see him =) Peasout and freeze Tibet, Neil > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Good Wood for Cane and Stick > Bot, > > The Bahi that you got is not old "palm" tree.
