Citizen Journalism By Dane Ali'i Thundershield Benicia, Calif It's FUN fiesta time! With over 25,000 projected attendees, it will be a true island festival atmosphere. The flavor will be Asian fusion of the lumpia and south seas barbeque variety but culturally and musically splashed with a plethora of Philippine party-oriented groups and individuals. Vallejo's scenic waterfront will have that aire and vibrance of the old country barrio "pestival" but done in good ol' U.S. of A. fun, flair, pride and sophistication. Everyone in the surrounding communities is invited to this ever- popular and community-wide event. It's Vallejo's own Pista Sa Nayon, a Filipino American Cultural Festival on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the scenic Vallejo Waterfront. It coincides to the June celebration as Philippine Cultural Month. The month long cultural & educational events commemorate the Philippine's declaration of independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. Last year, the event made it as Vallejo's largest FREE outdoor festival and attracted over 20,000 attendees from all over Northern CA. The whole family will enjoy this FREE and FUN event, which will include cultural performances, health fair, food court, arts and crafts booths and more. More than 72 vendor booths will be selling everything from native and local handicrafts to ethnic music and cultural interests. At one time, the New York Times rated Vallejo as one of the most diverse city in the US. Meanwhile, Filipinos comprise almost a quarter of Vallejo's overall population and contribute substantially to the state's economic being. The carnaval atmosphere will showcase the full spectrum of the Filipino community's culture, history and talent. Appearing are some of the biggest Filipino entertainers from Vallejo, SF Bay Area and the Philippines. There will be music diversity from Top 40 dance tunes to mainstream hip hop, soul sensation to funkified flavor, island jazz to traditional Philippine & tropical sounds. Headlining this year will be Patricia Javier, one of the most up & coming actresses/singers in the Philippines today. Scheduled performers include the bay area's top reggae masters Native Elements, D'Groove, Legaci, Eye Eighty, Ang Grup Pendong, 4 Corners, Likha dance group and others. Adding their talents will be The Springstowne Middle School Drumline. The 1st annual Eskrima Kali Arnis (all contact Filipino martial arts) Tournament Happening will be happening as well. The wildly-popular party band, D'Groove will close out the show with their soulful singing, in-synch choreography and irresistable rhythms that will surely get the crowd in a dancing and festive mood. Bring your dancercize shoes & get the mind in a party mode for sure.
