Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net yehey! On the shield: Perhaps Mr. Bot Jocano could help us out on the shield question. I wonder whether this is the correct kind of shield. Btw anyone know what the basis of this pose and accoutrements is? How'd they know this was the kind of weapon he carried? There have been contentions that he did not wield a bladed weapon when he met with Magellan that day... and where did the story of the shield come from? Even as an artist's rendition, it ought to be historically accurate... On Serrada Eskrima term: As mentioned eskrima is escrima or "fencing"... some Arnis style do use "serrado" and "abierta", and other words of spanish origin, but sometimes the Filipino meaning differs slightly (in some cases vastly) or is altered to "mean something like but not exactly like" the original spanish word... and over time the borrowed word beomes filipinized and may have a meaning totally apart from the original Spanish. "Cerrado" in Tag. base Filipino has a different spelling "sarado" but means the same thing... "abierto" is no longer used in Filipino but is sometimes found in some form in other Philippine languages (in one of the visayan lang., one might hear "abri anay" = "please open this now")... On GM Dee: who is GM Dee? take care and good luck! tenrec@avcorner.com tenrec2@yahoo.com tenrec2@gmail.com >Message: 1 >Date: Tue, 13 May 2008 23:39:01 -0700 (PDT) >From: Kristine Strasburger >To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >Subject: [Eskrima] Lapu-Lapu Sculpture Shield upside down????? >Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > >Ray, > > What makes you think that the shield in this picture is upside down? > > For the shape of this shield, it would make absolutely no tactical sense to have the straight edge at the top. The curved edge shown gives the head better protection, and allows for peeking around. Also, the arm straps are located above the mid-point in this sculpture, making for better mobility and balance in use. If you are thinking that the whole shield is upside down then the arm straps would be in the wrong position. If you are thinking that the sculptor might have placed the arm straps correctly, but placed the shield proper upside down, then this is a moot point. > > Kristine Strasburger > www.HeartlandEskrimaSchool.com > > ----- Original Message ---- >From: Ray > >To: Eskrima-Digest > >Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 3:20:05 >Subject: [Eskrima] Lapu-Lapu statue ? > >Which major statue of Lapu-Lapu is it >where they have him holding a >shield, but it is upside-down? Yes Tom I do agree, usually 2 sides to a story. I did try to contact the instructor we are both familiar with via email a litte over a year ago but no response. But I will attempt contact again. On a more positive note the WSEF has just completed an incredible 2 day seminar in Cleveland, Ohio. Many dignataries from the surrounding areas were present, trained and left with tremendous brotherhood and understanding. A particularly memorable part of the weekend seminar was the collaboration between GM D & Punong Guro Tony Marcial. As part of the ending celebration, GM D presented PG Marcial with an Honorary Master's degree within the WSEF. There will be further collaborative efforts in the very near future as well as collaboration with the USFMAF & Pangulong Guro Darren Tibon. Be well, more news coming soon.
