Not the least of which was how > organized tactics and superior equipment kicked > the snot out individual -- but functionally naked > warriors -- around the world. (Check out Cortez > and the Aztecs). cortes did not defeat the aztecs through organized tactics and superior equipment. he defeated them through a combination of native forces and smallpox. the 'aztecs' made a lot of enemies throughout mesoamerica, not the least of which are the totonacs of veracruz, who were in a nearly constant state of rebellion, and the tlaxcala, who were bitter rivals of the 'aztecs.' cortes recruited both these groups (and more) and used them to conquer tenochtitlan and the rest of the 'aztec' empire. at time of the conquest of new spain, cordoba was only beginning to form the spanish pike-and-shot-heavy colunela. many rodeleros (sword- and-shield men), who were one of the mainstays of spanish formations previously, were being drastically reduced under el gran capitan's new plan, and found work as freebooters and conquistadores. i think the osprey 'conquistadors' book you cited speaks to this as well. the spanish conquest strategy of using the natives to battle their rivals is what enabled their success. it wasn't the same pike-and- shot strategy that enabled them to dominate the battlefield in europe while the other countries adjusted. tim --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "jorge penafiel" To: Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2008 11:14:09 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] Chef Abon/Mactan per say!! To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Kapatid Jorge: Yes, kudos to Kapatid Abon for more culinary achievements. I agree about your spreading credit around. Just a few historical observations: (1) " Magellan for proclaiming and naming the Philippines for his King. He too would have been a great politician as well." Magellan actually called the islands "Islas de San Lazaro" because he arrived on the feast of St. Lazarus. It was Ruy de Villalobos much later in 1543 who first called the Phil. "Felipinas." He was actually naming the islands of Leyte, but eventually the name referred to the whole Philippines. (2) "Mactan Island as the battle site is now an International business hub, has an International airport, and one of PI best tourist attraction." Definitely. Cebu was and is one of my favorite cities in the Phil. The Mactan airport is currently managed by my good friend and former classmate, Gen. Danilo (Danny) Francia, (retired, PAF). Say hi to him the next time you go to Cebu and land in Mactan airport. And they made a movie about 300, the battle of thermapoly. When that movie was made, it stirred up alot of things. Then pretty soon they had historians on cable telling the real story. These were shots taken along Ninoy Aquino Ave. (Diversion Road) just a few hundred meters north of SM City Mall. The scene is near the bridge about 50 meters from Diversion Road & Road to Jaro Plaza junction. The scenario we witnessed made us return the next day to touch a few lives with what we can get hold of. This is the worst calamity that ever happened in the history of Iloilo City and the surrounding towns. What we have captured here are just the periphery at the onset of the flood's onslaught coz a few meters ahead the highway is already 2m under water and we've to back-off. More updates coming my great friends as we concretize a more structured effort to alleviate the sufferings of our "kasimanwas"... June 23 flood waters are gone..as of today June 24th (21st-22-23-24th) power is back in some areas including ours but more than a hundred thousand lives are still languishing in their sunken villages, subdivisions covered with sticky silt & mud, and damp evacuation centers suffering not only for the property losses and sickness but also for lack of food and water. The major problem right now is the main water line of Metro Iloilo Water District from Maasin. It's wrecked and restoration efforts may take at least two (2) weeks more to complete according to engineers. The road to normalcy may still be far off with billions worth of damages to crops, infra-structures and properties. But what is important is that we (you) can make a difference to ease the pains of our "kasimanwas"... all the best... van --- On Mon, 6/23/08, M.Al tares wrote: From: M.Al tares Subject: TYPHOON FRANK... "one guy"? dont laught, because this list is how i find private lesson students. each private lesson student is $300 a month or more. and they are very very dedicated students. they are hard core, and they train like mad men. not like the 25 years old guy who makes 2000 a month, buys spinners for his car, and cant pay your $150 tuition on time. the private students are sometimes 40, 50 years old. (i have a bunch of students older than 50) and they can whip on any young guy because they dont let party and women take them away from training. your not going to get a millions students, but you will get students who train hard, they are commit to the training, they pay on time, and they pay you what you are worth. teach private lessons and you can quit your job to teach full time. i just finished training a guy who came in at 730 this morning. my last student was last night at 10 p.m. i am going to spend the rest of my day with my kids play video games, then teach another private lesson at 3:45. my main school is in a bad neighborhood, my other one is in a nice neighborhood but i can give the best training and i dont have to song and dance to feed my family. i hope you guys try it out your going to see that it will help you improved your income. im not rich, but i am never going to be broke. if you like, you can email me and i can answer questions about it and help you do it.
