Bruno, who avoids all titles whatsoever, is a very interesting man. Christian, born in Egypt, fled with his family at the age of 15 after Nasser came to power, somehow he wound up in Venezuela, where his life long passion for martial arts (including training in FMA and Silat) led him to train in two different lineages of Garrote Venezolano. I was surprised to learn just how extensive GV is. Bruno had several discs of footage shot in Venezuela of the old masters. Very intriguing. The basic areas are stick vs. stick; stick vs. machete, machete vs. machete, knife vs stick or machete, and knive vs. knive and EH vs stick, machete, or knife. The distinctive features that call out to me are: 1) a very evolved media range training 2) DISTINCTIVE FOOTWITH with a strong emphasis on lead changes AND HAND CHANGES 3) lots of drift shots 4) a high percentage of the defense merges the attack, not blocks it 5) many low line attacks (especially to femoral/groin) Bruno agreed to do a DVD with us and we shot instructional footage. The final product will be a combination of cultural (e.g. showing lots of footage of sparring in Venezuela) and instructional. The Adventure continues, Crafty Dog PS: Bruno and I went to Joe Tan's place for his 60th birthday on Saturday night. Some of my fellow old-timers may remember Joe as the second Tapado fighter in Tape 6 "The Stick vs. Other Weapons". It was a pleasure to see Joe for the first time since that day (16 years ago or so!) He remains in formidable shape and gave me a book on Tapado and a tapado stick. In attendance were Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje, various friends from my Lameco days, Pappy Dog, and others. We watched the Pacquiao fight-- WOW. Very impressive--for me I was particulary impressed by the speed at which he recognized and took advantage of openings from many angles. Excellent long range upercut. Brave opponent. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray To: Eskrima-Digest Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2008 20:04:10 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Cacoy seminar in LA @ Parra's Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Mark Parra will be honored to host GM Cacoy Canete on August 9 & 10 in the LA area. But what are "drift shots"?   I regret losing contact with Bruno shortly after that.   Belated happy birthday to my kabayan Joe Tan, one of the old time real arnisadors and a man of many talents.  Did you know that Joe Tan was the artist who did the illustrations in Prof. Remy Presas's first book about Modern Arnis, the so-called pink book?  Jay de Leon www.filipinofightingartsintl.com   --- On Mon, 6/30/08, Marc Denny wrote: From: Marc Denny Subject: [Eskrima] Garrote Venezolano To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Monday, June 30, 2008, 6:48 PM Woof All: This past Friday-Sunday I was delighted to host Venezuelan Garotte stickfighting advocate Bruno Cruicchi.
