Most of the knife stories have been raised because of a few high media interest because a non poor white kid got murdered. knives and slashings have been going on for ages and its now hot topic of the month. They didnt give two f*cks the other year because it was happening to 'white/black trash'. I recall living in a very run down housing estate 12 - 15 years ago and it was common to see knives openly displayed in a jacket amongst the drug runners. As a doorman for 15 years i saw a fair share of knives and saw in my youth many knife fights that never made the news. In my youth the lads would wear a crombie coat with a steel comb where the handle was sharpened. The first credit type cards had the edges 'sharpened' for slashing. Stories were told of the teddy boys having razor blades in their collars so if anyone grabbed them...the stanley knife had a matchstick between two blades so the scar needed big stitches. Its not new. What suprises me most is that it tends to stay within its locality, occasionally bleeding out or when those who may be oblivious to the street truth of the area they wander into get caught up. Most kids in those areas are seen as potential suspects and are not 'protected' and feel they need to protect themselves therefore. The stop and search law may take a few knoives off the street but it enforces that ghetto mentality. I admit that I dont see the knives but then i dont put myself in positions where i might come face to face with them. That may be down to privelege, wealth or common sence. I dont need a gun either. I do quite a bit of free work on self protection to youths involved in drugs etc. I make the point carefully of the stupidity of carrying knives but then again i dont live in their world. Or do i? There are those that believe that knife crime is on the rise, and there are those that say it is actually simply being brought to people's attention more because the media are reporting it more and blowing it out of all proportion. I think that knife crime is on the increase, but not as large an increase as is reported in the press. The reason behind more people carrying knives is because they are hearing on the radio, seeing on the television and reading in the news that more people are being stabbed and assaulted, and understandably they are seeking to protect themselves. Now if I could only get these kids into my studio.... _________________________________________________________________ Find the best and worst places on the planet http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/101719807/direct/01/ --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 13:13:58 -0700 (PDT) From: maurice gatdula To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] making guns (or knives) illegal Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net i wanted to comment on the article about the knife attacks in england. i dont think its going to help to make any weapons illegal, to make crime go down. the people who needed to defend themself will not have a stronger way to protect against the criminals who rob steal and murder. the guys who are on the street commiting crimes will not stop shooting and stabbing people just because they are illegal. if you make them illegal then only the criminals will have weapons and we dont want that. so then, the hard working man who is trying to protect his family by keeping weapons will become a criminal too? how much sense is that? if they want to make a law or a ban that will help, then execute the ones who made a lifetime of villent crimes (save money too!), lock up people longer and get rid of "parole"---if the judge sentece you to 10 years, you DO 10 years. and if you are sick, or your parents died while you are in prison, oh well you made your own decisions should of thought about that. instead of taking away his right to vote when he gets out, take away his right to weapons. let the honest man carry his weapon, this is not the one who is robbing people. i bcc my students when i post here, and some feelings might got hurt, because many of my students are ex-con too. but you see these guys payed their dues, and they are hard-working family men now, and i'm sorry i still think its wrong to allow a man to go to prison, then own a gun when he comes out. maybe after 5 years or something, when he has proven himself, but anybody remember the lady who killed the 18 year old girl and cut out her baby? well, she was in prison for the same thing, in 1990, and did it again (she only did 7 years i think), thats crazy. i hope the english government doesnt make the knife illegal, it will just make sure that only criminals and gangsters have knives. here in california, we have one of the stupidest laws, nunchucks and shuriken is illegal. excuse me? so i cant even teach this weapon or have then in my school! trust me, if a crip or blood wants to carry one, that stupid law is not going to stop him. (his boys will probably laught at him anyway) but only a martial artist, and some kids whose never going to fight with one is going to have these things, i never understood that laws. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
