Long time reader, first time poster. I am wondering what the real interpretation of a Salutation is in regards to FMA. Also how other schools differ in their version ect. I practice 'Eskrima' and instead of bowing we salute. By this I mean we bring our arms with our fists clenched in front of our chest and form an X, we our backs straight. My understanding is that in Filipino culture they do not bow to any MAN, only GOD. Is this true? Just as the peoples and dialects of the Philippines are as numerous and diverse as its many islands, so are the FMA systems and methods that came out of them. In GENERAL most Filipinos do not bow to each other like their East Asian counterparts. Just as most Americans do not bow to each other either. There is a significant Western influence in the Philippines, not just from the US but also from Europe, namely the Spanish. Now, there are echoes from colonialism and just as soldiers or knights would bow/kneel before royalty there are some FMA systems that include a kneel as part of a full formal salute, usually on one knee and involving a motion that symbolizes the holstering of a sword. There are also FMA styles that do bow.
