They show the use of European weapons that are closer in size to what we see in FMA than a rapier. Perhaps this is a case of function following form, but the movements here are the closest I¢ve seen in Euro MA to what we see in FMA. As others on the list have said, there are only so many ways to swing a sword or lock an arm.   Medieval Italian dagger fighting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hByTzySPSfw&NR=1   German Short Sword (Messer) fighting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWISsk0cy74&feature=related   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38sVdx7nzhQ&feature=related   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teDmaWqZDc8   Regards, Tuhon Bill McGrath http://www.pekiti.com/ http://www.theswordoffire.com/ http://www.youtube.com/user/TuhonBillMcg     --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 23:13:44 -0800 From: Eskrima Digest Organization: maelstrom Core To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Update - 2008 Vancouver FMA Joint Training seminar and festival - a success!! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net An update on the 2008 Vancouver FMA Joint Training seminar and festival - held on Saturday Aug. 16, 2008 in Vancouver, BC, Canada - featuring instructors of the Vancouver Kali/Silat Association (VKSA). 10 instructors participated, including a surprise addition - maha guru Roedy Wiranatakusumah (pencak silat Jati Wisesa of West Java) - who dropped into Vancouver to visit on his way back to Asia. Starting at 11:00, presentations were ~30 minutes long for each instructor plus a 30 minute dance/music performance by Kathara Cultural Dance Theatre over the lunch time. There were about 80 people training, most of whom hung in for the whole day. Training ended around 17:30 with a BBQ!! Presentations ranged from street-savvy self-defense, to traditional Filipino stick arts, to cultural dance performance, to full-contact stick fighting, and of course pencak silat. Most instructors offered training, with some also doing demos. The public was invited and the entire event was free! It was great - it has been 12 years since we last got together and it was wonderful to see that we could still make it happen. And the vibe was extremely positive. A lot of families and friends were present, taking in the hot weather, enjoying the BBQ and the ambience of one of our nicer parks (with a small lake and a beach nearby). Many people contributed - but two people deserve immediate recognition - guru Louie Lindo who was the founder of the original FMA Joint Training events of the 90s and was the MC and one of the instructors for this one; and guro Brent Matsuda who had the inspiration, the initiative and the will to pull us all back to the table by organizing this event. Kudos to them and everyone who participated! We look forward to next year's event! To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Cc: kenjo73@yahoo.com Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net hello guys, yup, its all about the editor, mr. mirafuente, and of course to a large extent, mr. yambao, who agreed to the inclusion of that particular famous/infamous introduction.. w/c usually happens to be the source of various introductions of some of the great grandmasters of old who published their own books [and there are a lot of them - try telling them to their faces that what they wrote and believed in was not true..] -- and if i remember things correctly, it was only Gat Agbon who contributed in pursuing to the logical path of this book by identifying the Aglipay connection with Mirafuente and Yambao.. unfortunately, i've forgotten which Eskrima Digest volume that was.. anyway, bottomline, at least at that time.. we've traced the supposed creation of that word to the founder of the Aglipayan church, Fr. Gregorio Aglipay - and whether or not it was indeed his creation, only future researchers will ever know.. .. and by the way, to lighten things up and just to share with you guys.. one drunken evening a long time ago in parañaque, which used to be the hotbed of a very particularly strong FMA style.. while i was with fellow practitioners talking about the effectiveness of Filipino Martial Arts as compared to other martial arts, overflowing with national Filipino pride, i made the mistake of exclaiming in front of them: "mga putang-ina sila lahat - ni hindi sila nakalampas sa unang Pinoy na kumasa sa kanila!! -- unfortunately for me, the elder brother of my friend was also there - a genius and a nationalist in his own right, who called a spade, a spade - asked me point blank: "..and who is this Filipino you are referring to?" -- and of course i said: "pare naman.. siyempre si lapu-lapu!!" -- then he said: "with all due respect bro, Lapu-lapu was not even a Filipino - he was a native Sugbuanon, who was there to protect his tribe and not the entire Philippines.. there was no concept of a nation, the 'Philippines' at that time.. :-) -- moral of the story: misplaced national/regional pride will get you nowhere once you encounter a man of reason and a true researcher of that which was once truth.. -- bato-bato sa langit, ang tamaan, tamaan sana.. [nabukol ako nun e, sana kayo rin..] hehe.. -- galing talaga ng nangimbento ng "kali".. hehehe :-) mabuhay ang Pilipinas! --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2008: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
