Labor Day... have a good one. I'm having minor skin cancer surgery the following day, Tuesday, so the list may be slow for a day or two. It is out-patient, but done under a general anesthesia so I may not be up to watching the list on Tuesday. I checked the website and I do not find the term Sampu anywhere. I would like to correct it, if it is there. >Does the Modern Arnis group use the term "Dan" in their ranking >system? The rational for not using that term in Doce Pares is because >it is more of a Japanese/Korean term, thus "Degree Black Belt" is used >instead of Dan. > >Means pretty much the same thing, I know. Just curious... > >Ray > > We in Germany use the Lakan / Dayang + filipino numbers (isa, dalawa tatlo etc.) and the term of Dan, simply because Dan is a household term by now and also non martial artist can understand it without explanation. So when you use a belt grading system, like in most other martial arts do, we also use the term, that is commonly used there. That's all. Of course there is the german equivalent to "Degree Black Belt" which is "Schwarzgurt", but is quicker and as easy to understand, if you just write "Dan" All the information that Jay de Leon gave in his Message 4 of the eskrima digest Vol 15 #235 are exactly the way as I know them as well. >Jay de Leon wrote in Vol. 15 #232 message 4: > Hi Dieter: > >Congratulations on your Lakan Walo promotion; we will >now have to address you as Grandmaster Datu. > Hello Jay, no, you don't have to address me like that. In Germany it was the wish of GM Remy, that I am addressed during the training as "Datu" by my students and within the DAV, we handle it this way. We keep it that way, also now after my promotion. Outside of the training I am commonly known as: Dieter.
