Greg Alland's DVD "D" being sold at kalisilat.com contains footage of a young Diony Canete performing Beginner Katas 3 & 4 of Doce Pares (which implies that they have more).  Judging by the age of GM Diony Canete (and P. Greg Alland), the footage must have been taken in the early to mid-70s.   Message: 5 From: "The Sipins" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Le Punte Abenico Date: Sun, 21 Sep 2008 01:12:54 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net DP has numerous forms, with a few variations of the same forms from different people, or at different times. In 87 Greg was in Cebu for training with Diony, Cacoy, "Chito" Velez, Abner Pasas and others. I believe La Punti was an off-shoot group from DP at that time, they led some of the training. Some of what they did included a lot of, and was referred by them as "abaniko style". I'm fairly certain that was where and when he picked that up. Greg was in New Zealand at that time. I assumed that the Kata did not have an 'ancient' origin. I was just wondering if it was something that other people had learnt and passed on. (ie. come from modern arnis > diamondback) I suppose I really should ask Greg, but he's disappeared lol. To the guy who said: "oh wow... stick katas! i am from the philippines and been learning fma here, but i wish i knew one stick kata... but we don't have those." If you don't know a stick Kata, why don't you make your own? If you develop one (say 30 seconds) and look to include basic principles/strikes/blocks/transfers ect, in my humble opinion it can be very rewarding. Not only do you learn FORM, but you should be able to explain the application (Bunkai) of each movement. Such is the principle of Kata. Don't get me wrong, you should not become a Mechanical Man by doing Kata. But use them as part of your training. Sand the floor! Many of the forms had spots where they were open to add or use "personal interpretation", which was done by most of the GM's. This led to several variations of the same form over time, even by the same person. Several of the forms were deliberately changed a couple of times to be able to differentiate when someone had learned them. In other words you could tell if an instructor was "current". A few years ago, DPI (under GM Diony) "standardized" those forms, and others that had been used by DP elders and GM's but had not been part of the 12 forms formerly stressed. DPI under GM Diony currently documents 9 single stick, 1 double stick, 3 (or 4, with an extra variation from GM Cacoy) 1 empty hand, 1 sword, and 5 long stick/bangkaw forms. Black Belt Magazine Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net There's an article on this past June's Pekiti-Tirsia International summer camp in the November issue of Black Belt magazine (on newsstands now). It's a bit tongue-in-cheek, but hey, it's still publicity. The article about the PTI camp is on page 68. Here's the Black Belt web page that shows the cover: http://www.blackbeltmag.com/newsstand Also in this issue is a good, introductory article on FMA from Julius Melegrito of the Philippine Martial Arts Alliance. It appears on page 100.
