We should all know by now that Cacoy was/is about full- contact stick fighting and he didn't see that spending a lot of time working on stick katas was going to help someone become a better fighter. Mallari "FMA in the ‘Discovery Channel Magazine"  It always heartens me whenever the Filipino martial arts (FMA) are featured in international media. As a practitioner and chronicler of the FMA, I take pride in it. It’s a testament that our native fighting arts of arnis, escrima and kali are indeed world class. The latest issue of Discovery Channel Magazine carries two substantial features on the FMA. The first article entitled “Taming a Martial Art,” narrates of French martial artist Fred Evrard’ insights on kali (the term more popularly used in the West to refer to the FMA). The second story, entitled “Road Warriors,” focuses on Discovery Channel show Fight Quest stars Jimmy Smith and Doug Anderson’s experiences on FMA training in the Philippines. The differing impressions of foreign martial artists studying the FMA are interesting. Evrard, while acknowledging the warrior roots of the FMA, opted to highlight its spiritual and healing facet such as the art of hilot (the Filipino art of bone setting and therapeutic massage). “I won’t teach kali’s scary techniques without commitment to learning these spiritual tools,” he stresses. However, the two Fight Quest hosts, probably due to their limited exposure to the FMA, have only seen the combative aspect of the arts. Anderson, after witnessing Filipino practitioners spar with live blades, has this to say: “It’s not a martial art, it’s just a way to kill people.” Smith, meanwhile, was enthralled by the exotic appeal of the FMA, “We’ve got ten invitations to go back to the countries we visited and train more . . . but if I had to pick one style to go back and really learn and get a better handle on, I would say kali. It was so foreign to me, so to go back and explore the art form and learn a lot of the details would be a great opportunity,” he declares. I am hoping that the growing interest of the global martial arts community towards arnis, escrima and kali would result to higher standard of practice and research among its practitioners in the Philippines   --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Steve Klement To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 16:36:54 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] RIP Suro Mike Inay Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net RIP Suro Mike Inay - December 11th, 1944 - September 27th, 2000 Hope all Inayans get a good workout tomorrow in memory of Suro. At the ISE we are fortunate that the date falls on our formal class this year. I expect there will be a few show up that are ready to share memories of Grandmaster Inay and train intently with him in mind. For me I am happy enough that Inayan seems to be as strong as it can be at the moment. I was able to spend a few minutes on the phone this week with many of the seniors that carry his art into the future and though there are many camps, with different views of the art, they are all burning the candle in his name. Thursday morning we trained a Corrections group in Reactive Knife, Thursday night we had a good class at the ISE, this morning another Reactive Knife Defense course to a large and eager Criminal Justice High School class (35 students kept me and Katalungan Earles busy) and finally my weekend will culminate with our Memorial Workout tomorrow morning. I have found that training is the best way for me to be in touch with Suro and so this weekend has so far been a blessing and kept me busy. Train hard.
