To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Greetings! The carabao/water buffalo in the Philippine farmlands and rural areas is the hand tractor, pick-up truck, prime mover truck, the ATV (All Terrain Vehicle), the motor cross racing bike (carabao races in barrio fiestas), AUV (All purpose Utility Vehicle), a farm pet, and a faithful friend of the Filipino farmers rolled into one. In fact it is not uncommon that they are given names and are taken not only as field faithful buddies but as treasured and dearly loved members of the family.... Carabaos are well taken care of just like the rest of the members of the family, regularly fed and bathed... but definitely, NOT as SPARRING PARTNERS and DUMOG TRAINING BUDDIES as depicted in the youtube... "ahayyy patawara nyo lang ang direktor" (ohhh pls forgive the director) "M.Al tares" wrote: greetings! am just wondering if carabao/water buffalo wrestling is a new fad (syllabus) in FMA? as for me...it's improbable.... even if u comb the whole philippine islands...AMBOT....WAAY GID SINA DONG! Lavalle won the single stick gold medal in the under 79kg men's division. The women's team, led by Rosanna Lavalle, along with Shelley Lee, Cyd Keeble and Vicki Heckenberg, brought home four medals between them. In the women's open events, Lee claimed a silver medal for double sticks and Keeble bronze in both single and double stick events. Rosanna Lavalle, Keeble and Heckenberg also won a bronze medal in the women's team competition and Lavalle took out the plate division final. "There were a lot of experienced fighters at the championships and the Reflex team were the new ones," Dominic Lavalle said. "The training leading up really paid off." About 100 competitors from Poland, Indonesia and Brazil, as well as Australia and New Zealand, competed. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Wed, 29 Oct 2008 13:06:57 -0700 (PDT) From: jay de leon Subject: Re: [Eskrima] carabao/water buffalo wrestling in FMA? To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net re the Human Weapon's carabao segment, i believe the score was something like carabao 3, arnisadors 0.   fwiw, the carabao training did not help, as in the final combat conclusion, GM Gaje's ward (Jason Chambers) was schooled by Val Pableo.  not a fair fight, in my opinion.  Jason was fortunate to come out of that one with just a smashed finger, but he deserves props for having the balls to go up against a champion arnisador (even if it is just show business).   Jay de Leon www.filipinomartialartsmuseum.com   p.s. i bet you val pableo did not have to wrestle no carabao during his training, either in his youth or for this TV show.  --- On Wed, 10/29/08, ILDEFONSO ODAL wrote: From: ILDEFONSO ODAL Subject: Re: [Eskrima] carabao/water buffalo wrestling in FMA? I read it before. Perhaps you should re read it. Here is a portion of the quote you so astutely provided: "I renounce my usage of the title "Datu", and remove it from public usage within Natural Spirit Int'l." I renounce MY usage....remove it from PUBLIC usage. As I said: "What he renounced is the "open" use of the title "Datu" for himself, and most associations within modern arnis, particularly the other "Datus". He would never renounce his association with Remy A. Presas, the founder. People with ties to NSI, Kellys organization, will still call him Datu. How did this get to be about the Datu title when my original post was about not all modern arnis people being just stick people? Regards, Dan McConnell Message: 1 From: Danny Anderson To: Date: Tue, 28 Oct 2008 02:12:52 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Kelly Worden & Modern Arnis Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Dear Dan, Below is his published announcement. He says what he says re his use or non-use of the datu title in the next to the last paragraph. His admiration for Prof. Presas is very evident in his announcement. Yours, Dan Anderson To whom it may concern within the FMA community and beyond, public announcements are never enjoyable to release. Yet due to the nature of martial arts and rumors I have decided to clarify my future position regarding my personal involvement within Modern Arnis.FMA is a dynamic art, a beautiful art that has blossomed to worldwide acceptance. The late Professor Remy A. Presas committed his life to the teaching and development of all FMA as well as his personal expression, Modern Arnis. In our relationship, Professor always guided me to seek my own destiny and "make the art my own." The advancement of Natural Spirit Int'l as an independent system was well established long before Professor Presas passed away in 2001. Prior to that time I returned to Modern Arnis to share the positive bond, mutual respect, and the friendship we had established yet lost due to politics and unimportant disagreements. In his final days just prior to his death, Roland Dantes and I were both by his side, it was then Professor stated "You are not my students, you are my brothers!" After the passing of Professor Presas I continued to assist Remy Presas Jr. along with Rodel Dagooc and the late Dr. Willie Matias in his efforts to "keep the family name alive within Modern Arnis."On August 28th 2008 it will be 7 years since Professor passed away. The time has come for me to return to my own path of destiny and the advancement of Natural Spirit Int'l.I desire to make that step as a personal choice, a professional choice, as an American martial arts practitioner.I truly feel the usage of the Datu title was a vision of the late Professor Remy A. Presas. I was honored by the faith he bestowed in my dedication to propagate his teachings, while assisting in the evolution as well as the historical preservation of Modern Arnis. In that regard, I have always believed Modern Arnis is a cultural art as well as a Presas family art. With or without my assistance or opinion, Modern Arnis shall indeed continue to flourish for generations to come.It is at this time July 1st . 2008, with all due respect I renounce my usage of the title "Datu", and remove it from public usage within Natural Spirit Int'l. In addition I will no longer have any direct involvement within the political or technical stability of Modern Arnis. From this point forward I choose to disseminate my Americanized progression of Arnis as /N.S.I.A. Natural Spirit Int'l Arnis. Respectfully,Kelly S. WordenInt'l Director of Natural Spirit Int'l"What he renounced is the "open" use of the title "Datu" for himself, and most associations within modern arnis, particularly the other "Datus". He would never renounce his association with Remy A. Presas, the founder. People with ties to NSI, Kellys organization, will still call him Datu. There has been much happen in the modern arnis community that played into his decision. He is easy enough to get a hold of to get clarification. He does, certainly, include modern arnis and much blade work in his training and teaching.
