The indigenous Dumog has two basic aspect/category a) Sports Dumog b) Dirty/Martial Dumog for self defense and survival 2. The Traditional Sports Dumog is governed by rules with holds and locks classified as legal and illegal to make it safe and enjoyable competitive sports activity. The main object is to pin down ones back part of both shoulders and hold it touching the ground for three counts Hence, based on the aforementioned objective in Traditional Sports Dumog it is ridiculous to train ones self in wrestling, toppling and pinning down the Carabao to the ground. Carabaos don't wrestle, they are animals of burden-workers whose forte is pulling heavy loads not wrestling. They are not belligerent animals. Yes they've strong bulky trunk and four strong legs and are effective for pulling plows and carts even in muddy ground but definitely not designed to coil and strangle or lock one to submission or pin down the highly mobile intelligent wiley human wrestler or "manog dumog". So please think think think about these facts my friends before believing the propositions that Carabaos are traditionally used as Dumog training partners... thats ridiculous and hilarious... a big distortion of the Filipino Martial Culture. Dumog is a traditional past time of farm workers and fishermen whose work are seasonal as dictated by tropical seasons and weather conditions since time immemorial in Panay. During the times in its history where electricity, transistor radios and telivision sets are never heard in the interior towns and coastal towns of Panay the excess energies of the young people more so the ordinary laborers who are used to carry and transport hundreds of 50 to 100 kilograms of sacks of rice from remote rice fields over slippery rice paddies for hundreds and hundreds of meters to the nearest bodega is more than enough training for trunk, legs, arms, neck, to flip one through the air and slam or pin one to the ground to submission or for a three count score for the win. With the hard life and seasonal nature of the planting, harvesting seasons in the farmlands and the stormy seasons for the fishermen these hardened laborers of Panay then opt to be Migrant Contract Workers or "Sakadas" from Panay to the vast labor intensive Sugarcane Fields- "Haciendas" in the neighboring island of Negros and some parts of sugar producing areas in Luzon bringing along with them their skills and favorite past time of "Dumog" for the "Sakadas" and "Eskrima" for the Foremen/ Group Leaders. Cutting and loading up tons and tons of sugar canes up the loading trains and large cargo trucks bound for the Sugar Mills the whole day for weeks and even months under the searing heat of the sun and rain are again more than enough training to the wiry hardened sneaky wiley Dumog enthusiasts and practitioners. So why Carabao, why bump and pull large trunks of trees... thats creative propaganda... far from reality just to make Dumog look so exotically indigenous to the unsuspecting western market. Re Open Challenge of guts and test of skills in Eskrima? To all the Great Great Tuhons and Great Great Grand Grandmasters or Great Great Guro of Kali and Arnis who are living in relative abundance, whether Pinoy by blood or Westerner who might need a good mileage of attention (kulang sa pansin), and media exposure whether for media, marketing, or popularity to simply bring a foreign U$ Aid to your hungry Eskrimadores friends here in the Islands of Panay and or Negros Philippines: At least "A Year's Salary" as "Pot or Reward Money" which can be P6,500/month X 12 months =P78,000 or say U$2,000 only and offer it to whoever can beat you up in any of your Public Open Challenge of guts and skills in Eskrima. It's surely guarranteed that lots of low profile, silent eskrimadores from Panay and or Negros Islands would be very much willing and gladly take up that challenge for duel of guts and fighting skills whether in public or in secret or even under the cover of the vast mountains in any weapon of choice stick or live blade... In Hiligaynon: "Kon ginabaligya ninyo ang kina-adman kag isog ninyo madamo gid ang maluyag magbakal sina!" (If you are selling your skills and guts, surely many will love to buy that!). In these difficult times you'll surely find what you are looking for. Some of the eskrimadores in Panay and Negros have learned their lessons who in their innocence and sincerity have been conned by those who in the guise of research and FMA promotion outside of the country some of their homegrown techniques and styles were stolen (No naming of names). In this difficult times some of the homegrown eskrimadores have resolved that even taking up a challenge from visitors and foreigners will not be for free. Bow... I thank God for so much in my life: My Job (which pays for everything), My Home, I always have Food, Clothes, Car, Martial Arts, and even that cold Beer in the fridge. I give Thanks for this forum, because I know that somehow it has enriched my life. Thank you all and may You and Your Families have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
