(CJ)   during my time in the phil., CJ meant one of three things:   (1)  any empty hand system with judo techniques in them, including what bot was referring to.   (2)  modified or bastardized kodokan judo that had many other self-defense techniques mixed into it.   (3) an honest-to-goodness jiu-jitsu system, usually japanese.   when i was in high school, i was a pioneer of their kodokan judo program, which had excellent instructors.   but there was a another school-sanctioned program called CJ.  while we wore white kimonos and adhered to the discipline and structure of the kodokan system in the school gym, these guys trained behind closed doors in street clothes, with yawaras (kubotans to you) tucked in their waistbands.   we were friends with some of them, and regularly had training sessions with them.  we found out that their instructor studied jiu-jitsu in japan. they had the usual locks and come-alongs, then they would execute their throws while maintaining the lock or hold.    for example, he might have you in a thumb lock, then he will drop into a kata-guruma (like a fireman's carry) and you end up with a nasty fall and a broken thumb.   it is very similar to danzan-ryu jiu-jitsu.  in san jose, california, i had FMA students who were high-level danzan-ryu.  they excelled in stickgrappling.  they would tie you up with the stick, then execute a throw, sweep or reap, very similar to manong cacoy canete's eskrido.   one of these was Jeremiah Stanley, now an active danzan-ryu instructor and lakan guro under me.   sidebar:  back in high school, we kodokan guys were curious but not intimidated by the CJ guys, because we were tougher (wink).  we had many friendly workouts, although a fistfight did break out once between two guys.  we were high school juveniles, then.   our reputation also stemmed from that of our instructor, the actor vic vargas before he became an actor.  he was tall, built like a bodybuilder, was a judo national champion while still a teen-ager, and walked with a quiet swagger that said, if you want to try out this black belt, you are welcome to throw down any time.   just reminiscing.   jay de leon www.filipinofightingartsintl.com   --- On Wed, 1/7/09, Felipe Jocano wrote: From: Felipe Jocano Subject: Re: [Eskrima] UFC To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 10:10 PM Hence a number of FMA systems, including LSAI, labeled the empty-hand disarming part of their curricula, combat judo....
