I understood the 100th monkey tall tale to stand for the proposition that there is a yet unknown form of communication that occurred when sufficient numbers of monkeys on one island started doing something (IIRC it was washing food) that somehow magically another group of monkeys started doing the same thing. This I understand to be balderdash. The concept you cite, "an art could develop in different areas of the world without it necessarily being passed on by contact", IMHO is not the same thing at all. Yes, the theory was debunked , but the essence has imho some value as maybe a parable does. How many times do we see people on the different sides of the world racing to be the first to invent something that is similar and it can be hard to see where the link might have been. Since we are meant to be only 6 people away from a relative as we generate from he same gene pool, depending on how you want to see it that is, it is not that difficult to see seemingly unconnected tribes with similar 'inventions'. I've heard it say we only use a fraction of our brains capability and how many times have you thought about someone and then that very person has phoned you within a minute? Our minds seem to get blocked with an equation that once someones solves opens streams of inventiveness that eclipses the breakthrough. I think this is captured under Quantum pseudo-telepathy. So with the human body made somewhat in a patented fashion, it's hardly surprising to find similarity of arts throughout the world and attempting to source it to one race, one spring, may be a waste of effort and only serve to suit dogmatic beliefs. My referencing the 100th monkey was simply to suggest that point.
