Largusa in health update Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Grandmaster Ben T. Largusa of the Villabrille-Largusa Kali system was conscious and speaking to his family this morning from his hospital bed in Las Vegas, Nevada. He apparently slipped into what is being reported as a Diabetic coma last Thursday according to my source. Grandmaster Largusa is 83 years old. If and when more details or updates become available I will post them. _________________________________________________________________ Get more out of the Web. If you like Sci-fi / Fantasy definitely get Tuhon Bill McGrath's book. I live and train in Virginia and bought this book on-line - here is the review on the book Asulon that I posted on Amazon. Norris "Asulon is a unique blend of fantasy, religion, philosophy and magic. The author deftly weaves parallel history, geo-politics, religion and magic into an action packed novel. The opening chapter with the main protagonist prince Daniel (who is the grandson of a neutral angel who would neither fight against God or against his fellow angels) grabbed me instantly. The book is also interspersed with a lot of genuine in-depth knowledge on many subjects woven in as a natural by product of the story line. For example, during a discussion with a dwarf on sword making, a lot of real information was provided about middle-age steel smelting and sword manufacture methods. In addition Mr. McGrath is a recognized expert in bladed and close quarter combat which added a very realistic dimension in the fight and training portions of the book. As an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy for 40 years, I highly recommend this book." --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2009 22:47:54 -0800 (PST) From: jay de leon Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Grandmaster Ben T. He was 66.   Gonzales’s body lies in state at his friend’s house in Tandang Sora, Quezon City.   “Maliit kasi ang pasilyo papunta sa bahay namin kaya nagprisinta ‘yong kaibigan niya na dito na siya iburol,” partner Rose said.   Gonzales had sired two children with his former house help Rose - Rhoda, third year, and Bobby, first year high school.   “Eighteen lang ako no’n nang pumunta sa kanilang bahay sa Project 6. Ako ang nagtatrabaho sa kanyang bahay. May pera pa siya no’n. Hanggang sa nawalan na siya ng girlfriend. Ako ang naiwan. Ako ang nag-alaga sa kanya hanggang ngayon,” confessed the now 40-year old common-law wife.   The former debonair karate expert, who introduced self-defense in the local movies in the tradition of Bruce Lee, had seven other kids with three women. He had three children with former leading lady Rina Imperial, who is now based in the United States, and two each with non-showbiz women.   “Nag-reunion nga ‘yong mga anak niya sa burol no’ng isang gabi,” chuckled Rose.   ‘He died poor’   He used to be Fernando Poe Jr. and Joseph Estrada’s rival at the tills during the late 60s and early 70s. There was even a time that Gonzales had surpassed the combined box-office receipts of both Estrada and Poe’s movies.   He was famous and rich but, somewhere along the way, he lost his popularity and his millions. Gonzales died poor.   Years before he succumbed to second heart attack last week, friends said he was like a beggar asking for alms from his colleagues in the film community.   “Nakakaawa talaga si Betong,” said comedian Amay Bisaya, referring to Gonzales’s pet name.   There were no more movie offers except for occasional screen appearances. But the talent fees were still not enough to feed his family.   “Pero ang ipinanghihingi niya ng pera araw-araw sa kanyang mga kaibigan ay para sa kanyang dalawang anak na estudyante,” said dubber, actress and line producer Olive Madridejos.   Although interment has been scheduled on Sunday, Gonzales’s family has yet to look for additional money for funeral expenses.   Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Lito Lapid, who are also actors, have already sent flowers. His family said hopefully financial donations would follow.   “Pag nagkakasakit noon si Betong, sina Bong at Lito ang nagbibigay sa akin,” said Rose. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Eternal IV To: Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2009 07:21:00 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Martial arts manuals Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey all, I found these manuals on a website for a club. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just wondering... in these modern times, combat is not done with blades anymore, right? So, how does one become a "recognized expert" when you can barely have an experience with an actual bladed combat? There are a lot of recognized "close quarters" experts, "blade" experts, and so on and so forth... but I thought... without actual experience, is it possible that one can have that recognition? --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2009 13:23:49 -0800 (PST) From: B Katz Subject: Re: [Eskrima] how does one become a "recognized expert"? To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Best guess... make the claim. Seems to be the order of the day anymore. We have had a strip-mall sensei here in town take a arnis seminar, (JUST ONE!!!) and start TEACHING in his school. It's tragic, I iknow.   Short of official recognition from an accepted Master, (like GM Diego) it would be a hard sell for ANYONE to get it by me. I meet too many clowns that make the claim and then wilt like lettuce under a heat lamp when someone suggests some hard contact sparring.   Case in point... We had a fellow make all sorts of noise about being a kali player. So we invited him to come hang out with us at our weekly stick-banging session. He was very unceremoniously THUMPED by my 13 year-old son. Bear in mind that this guy looked GREAT on paper. Credentials til who laid the rail, but when confronted with a 100 lb, 5' 1" boy who was coming at him with intent... he ended up using his certificates to wipe the tears of humiliation.   I guess that my point is simply this... The only way to ascertain "Master" ranking is to prove it.   Just the thoughts of a guy that has a couple scars... --__--__-- Message: 11 From: "Roy Parker" To: Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2009 18:04:03 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Training in Baguio Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Does anyone have info on arnis training in Baguio City, Philippines?
