I've never done a demonstration before, and am open to any and all suggestions. --------------------- Freedom isn't free... I PAID FOR IT. First sticks, then spice it up by switching to blades. You gotta do some silat take down ;) Outta Control --- On Thu, 4/9/09, Ray wrote: > From: Ray > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Demonstration Suggestions > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Date: Thursday, April 9, 2009, 12:13 PM > Sinawali is good for lots of > flash.  First sticks, then spice it up by switching to > blades. > > Ray Terry > EskrimaDigest@sbcglobal.net > > > On Apr 9, 2009, at 3:23 AM, Eric Taimanglo wrote: > > > I've never done a demonstration before, and am open to > any and all > > suggestions > _______________________________________________ > Eskrima mailing list, 2,700 members > Eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource > Standard disclaimers apply > Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://eskrima-fma.net --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Thu, 09 Apr 2009 14:31:32 -0700 From: Mike Casto To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Demonstration Suggestions Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Good suggestions so far. One thing I used to have trouble with is pacing. If I go at a pace I consider moderate (i.e.: average training speed) the audience - unless they're very experienced martial artists - can't even process what's happening. They get sensory overload and kind of tune out. What I have found useful is to start *really* slow with something like Siniwali then very gradually increase the tempo. That way you can sort of reel them in. When you switch to something else like a sumbrada reduce your speed again and gradually build. For application work it's often good to do the technique once slowly then repeat it faster. Most audiences are easy to blow away - but that doesn't make that big an impact or lasting impression. Using the slow speed stuff (and it will probably feel like you're moving at a snail's speed compared to what you're used to) and gradually speeding it up is a way that I've found effective for actually *engaging* the audience. They see the slo-mo and think, "That's really cool." Then you turn up the speed and they think, "Wow!" but they're still able to relate to it because of the slo-mo start. This method has worked for me. Your mileage may vary :-) Mike Alvin Alejandro wrote: > To carry on what Ray suggested is that I would recommend some Largo Mano stick > movements to show some long range techniques then move to Medio and go to do > Sinawali, then do some systematic disarms from both of y'all, then go to > knives and do some Hubud, then more knife disarms, and finally do to another > rounds of Hubud and sensitivity drills and a final take down with Silat > finish.
