Arnis is a local form of martial arts that uses sticks as weapons. Zubiri, a former Bukidnon congressman, is an avid arnis fan himself. In an interview with INQUIRER.net, he said he keeps himself fit by attending arnis classes once a week. He said he and other enthusiasts are re-organizing a local association to promote arnis especially among the younger generation of Filipinos. “We want to make arnis a national sport because this is our own sport, unlike those most commonly practiced that originated from other countries,” Zubiri said, interviewed during the opening of this year’s Trans Sport Show Wednesday (April 22) at SM Megamall Zubiri has filed Senate Bill 1424, proposing to make arnis a national sport. He said he is hoping his bill makes it on a third reading in the Senate and is likewise hoping it gets favorable attention in the Lower House. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray To: Eskrima-Digest Date: Sun, 26 Apr 2009 07:15:38 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] list back up Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net The list was apparently down while I was out of town teaching at The Gathering. Itching to make up for their dismal fourth place finish in the 2007 edition of the tournament which was held at the Cebu Coliseum, Team Philippines claimed four golds in the forms competition, led by the University of Cebu (UC) Arnis Team which captured two gold medals. June Babe Caballes, a member of the 2nd Force Philippine Team, was in a class all her own as she won the boys/girls below 18 years old double weapon form event. She also collared a silver medal for her second place finish in the boys/girls below 18 years old single stick form event. Team 1 of UC also won the Team Demo event while their Team 4 took the bronze medal in the same contest. CDP Philippines won the silver medal. Ronald Farol of the Philippine National Police (PNP) took center stage with his gold medal performance in the men/women 18 years old above double weapon form while Miko Canete of CDP Philippines accounted for the country’s fourth gold medal with his victory in the boys/girls below 18 years old single stick form event. The lone gold that got away from the Filipinos’ grasp was that of the men/women 18 years old and above single stick competition which was won by Australian Grandmaster Vince Palumbo of the ICMAA. Jhun Ahr Sudaria of UC had two bronze medals, one in the single stick and another in the double weapon form while Riel Taba, also of UC, had the last of the country's bronze medals with his third place finish in the 18 years old and above single stick form.
