Anyways, simple question, how do you test your art? What does it mean to test your art in a Filipino Martial Arts context? What is your relationship to the art when you test it, is it yours? Anyways, looking forward to some interesting discussion. As for my answer, fight, fight, mine. Two or three times a month a doofus is bound to try the "Little Bouncer". So far so good. I blame that on three damn fine Guros and my naturally combative nature. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: no no To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Testing your art Date: Wed, 24 Jun 2009 16:38:55 +0000 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Though I still consider myself rather unskilled, I would like those of you with more experience to evaluate my opinion. I do not fight to test my art but spar instead. I believe this is a greater test of skill than the actual fight since it requires even more control to hold back than to strike. As a combat veteran, there is no difference to me between real and spar in my mindset only in the physical actions taken. Perhaps others feel differently when training than in a real fight, the adrenaline rush and the heightened sense of things. The sensation that time slows down. For me to test my art in an FMA context is to poke those instincts and hardwired reflexes at every opportunity. It is part of what makes us better fighters. As for the last question: My skills, few though they are, have been hardwired. There is no further integration possible, I still use the Hoobud block when surprised even when I should be doing something else in a training set. I submit my answers to those of you with greater experience. Enlighten me please.
